Looking after old relatives

Started by: cherryandwhite (548)

Does anyone have any views of how to break the news that your elderly parent/relative will have to go into care because you cannot care or cope for them anymore, and are there any associations available to give you advice?

Cherryandwhite have just seen a programme on Granada called This Morning all about young (and old) carers looking after elderly relatives sometimes it can be a full time job with no breaks or holidays, but if all the familly rallies round it makes it a lot easier. Reading through the lines it seems that you are in this unenviable position. Good luck anyway.

I go to Turkey a lot for my holidays and the Turks look after the old members of the family like the old ones used looked after them when they where kids, now thats what I call family.I know when people get ill and aged its difficult and in todays world people have got to work but like prince says when the family rallies round it makes it easier.I cant think of any of my family being in a home and I hope and pray I dont end up in one.

Hello Coccium, just read your comments about the Turks. The Italians and Spanish are also very similar when it comes to looking after their old ones. My mother who lives in Wigan has turned 88 and is wheelchair bound, but my brother wont even ring her never mind about shopping or cleaning. Is it possible to embarrass someone into helping their mother or should you just leave it to their lack of moral responsibility. Sometimes it makes me so mad, no time for your mother, but time enough for the pub and Haydock races!

Paul, I know your brother, why dont you just ring up the personal department at Heinz and tell them all about him? (or get someone to "persuade" him to go round)

Hi Paul. I really admire you for the way you look after your mother, given the fact that you live in Switzerland. It must be hard combining the two but, you do it with love and respect for her. Your a top man.

Putting my parents in a nursing home was one of the most difficult decisions I ever had to make
They lived all their lives in Wigan until they were no longer able to take care of themselves.
We brought them to live in Essex and we took care of them in our home for 3yrs until it got to the stage where we could not manage them.
We had some very difficult times and decided to get some help it is 1yr ago today that we put mum in the home as we were trying to place them together but because their needs were different mum had to be assessed first.Dad went in 2 wks later and although we managed to get them in the same home they were not in the same unit.
Neither of them wanted to go into a home and I didn't want them to go but I did it and they are both now dead and I am still living with the guilt.
There is no easy way of doing it especially if they don't cooperate.

You should get help from social services to find a suitable placement but if they have property or savings you will have to pay towards the cost of their care!!!!!

Hiya 1934granada, thanks for the kind words sometimes its hard, but my mother has all her faculties and a very good sense of humour and her grandchildren adore her. Dont know why my brother stopped contact, he remarried about 4 years ago and if I try to speak to him he just says "I have my own family to look after" thats why I am so gratefull for help from friends and neighbours and Wiganers in general are very friendly and generous people. p.s. I like curry too!

Paul, forget about your brother, you njust keep trying to look after your mother as best you can. Dont forget she looked after you for many years. Your brother will live to regret his actions when your mother is no longer here. As for "persuading" him to go and see here, forget it, he's not worth it.

Hi again 1934granada, yeh I try to get over to Wigan at least once a month. My mother is over here at the moment, but because of her age its getting increasingly more difficult, she says to tell you she knows Jimmy Brady and Terry Jukes as well as Tommy Lyons. Its always nice to come back and have a pint or two in the Colliers. Am sorry to hear about your parents Kathy, but its always in hindsight and nobody knows how they would react in such a situation as you found yourself. God bless bioth of you

What I like about Asians ,besides being married to one his the way they look after their Parents.I think the same problem his rife here In Ausse, after all we are all of the same race.Like some one said It his not always possible to give the Older people the care they require and they need to go In to a Nursing Home.People who go In to Nursing Homes have their life expectancy reduced.

Cherryandwhite it is never easy especially if the elderly relative doesn't want to go - and most of them don't. They want to be in their own house, in their own room that they have been in for xx years. But sometimes they need specialist care, sometimes the carers' health starts to suffer, lifting into showers, baths etc. Also if you are the carer it can be a 24 hr. thing whereas the people in the homes do their shifts then go home. Have you tried social workers or someone associated witht the home? They are usually expert at dealing with these kind of situations and they know how to talk to them and pick out the positive points.

If you are feeling any guilt, a friend of mines parents were elderly and after 48 yrs. of marriage he got too ill and had to go into care, he was in his 70's and eventually it became too much for his wife. He kicked and cursed and called her all the names under the sun going into the back of the ambulance - and this was his wife who had cared for him and that he loved dearly. She had no choice.

Hope it all works out for you mate. Take any help and advice you can get.

Hello ozzielass (what a beutiful woman you are!) just read your views, but would like to point out its not (and could NEVER be!) my mother that were talking about. From what I can see reading this thread, Mrs. Nicholson has 2 sons, one living in Switzerland who seems to be flying back and forth every week, while the other brother who lives in Wigan refuses to have anything to do with this old lady because he's too busy! People like that make my blood boil, but myaybe one day he will be in the same position as his mother. Hope so!

Sometimes I think we just have to accept that we are not all the same. As much as most of us would do the right thing whether it is the way we look after our children, family, animals etc. - not everyone has the same caring, compassionate nature.

As the saying goes "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink". Hope we never go down the track of USA where many old people suffering from dementia are literally just dumped at the hospital doors, no ID nothing.

Personally if I got to that age and one of my kids didn't give a stuff about me, I wouldn't want them anywhere near me. I think I would rather be with strangers my age and have a good yarn about 'the good old days when I was a young lass in Wigan'

This thread started as looking after elderly relatives but has developed into something very personal.
It appears that some have taken over and decided to make decisions for others

Some of you are doing more complaining than pnicholson who appears to be doing a good job of caring for his mum even though he lives a distance from her
Whatever the brothers reasons for not keeping in touch with his mum he will have to live with that decision
If you want to help do it in a constructive way it is no good digging the dirt.
I speak from experience I was spending all my free time travelling to Wigan when my parents were alive and I was the same as pnicholson I did it because I wanted to do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speaking of which, thank you for your kind comments prince/cherry & white. Note my fotos are long distance, I gave up buying cosmetics at Boots a long time ago, I just buy an economy sized spakfilla from the hardware A smudge of vaseline of the camera lens does a good job too!

Dad was 8 years older than mum but when she thought it was the middle of the night when it was broad daylight...etc. Dad was exhausted and something had to be done. We got in touch with Age Concern (who were brilliant) and Mum was placed into a home which we were all happy with and so was Mum. There's only so much you can do, cherryandwhite, before your loved one(s) need professional care.

Just to clear up any misunderstandings, my parents have both passed away and I was just voicing my humble opinion regarding pnicholsons mother and the problems he is confronted with living in Switzerland. Like you say there's only so much you can do, but the burden (sic)shouldnt just fall on one person when other members of the family are doing nothing. Anyway I dont think there's a lot more to say on this subject so I (for one) will call it a day. Good luck to you though Mr. nicholson.

Hi levi1962, what a sad story, and I thought I was in dire straights. Also have the feeling, should anything happen to my mother, certain people will be round like a shot weeping and wringing their hands, but as I said before, not everyone is selfish and some folk do things above and beyond expected things.
Most of the people that help my mother I had'nt seen in over 30 years, and it humbles me. Where I live you dont even know the name of the next door neighbour, and thats one of the things that I realy miss about Wigan. My mother will NEVER go into a home as long as I can help it, even if it means moving back to the UK, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Good luck (viel gluck)

Cherryandwhite, In the complex where I live we have 2 or 3 residents who never ever see their relatives,& i've heard of relatives only visiting when they want money,I am fortunate that I get visits from my family, but unfortunately in this world we now live in,it is becoming the norm to dump your parents when they get old & feeble, this practice is now spilling over to the Asian population whose caring for elderly relatives has always been part of their culture...

Hello bryn156, read your letter with interest because one of the things you northeners are (were) better at than us was looking after your old folks, but have just realized your as bad as we are. The sign of a modern and just society is how you look after your parents in their old age. Anyone who turns their back on a parent when they most need help is nothing more than a savage, but in this world of ME Me Me its becoming more and more common! Culture? you can keep it, I know what I will do when I cant look after myself. Still a couple of years left
though.

Hi Prince, hello pauln, was in St Judes yesterday having a chat to a number of people. Jimmy Hickey was not in, but I've got his mobile number and will give him a ring this afternoon. The general consensus was that this man is not worth bothering about or does not realize what he's doing to his sick mother, if I could find out someone's name who works in Heinz who would tell him, it would make things a lot easier! Will keep on trying, if anyone on WW works at Heinz please get in touch.

My wife has M S and I am the primery carer. We have aids to help and carers coming in at morning and evening . It can get hard as being on benefits mean NO holidays or anything fancy as you get enough to live on.
I have told my children not to care for their mother as I am now doing as their lives would be compromised and they would be in the rut . Their lives must be their own and they can decide and live their own way.
There are some plus`s with this job , sitting in the garden on nice days and you are your own boss , you decide how to run your day. It`s not all doom and gloom

Now for the complete opposite of Hector, pauls brother. Spoke to J Hicky yesterday and he told me that people just ignore your brother if he comes into the club because they are so disgusted with him. There must be someone working for Heinz who reads this thread who can help, but so far no resonse. Will keep trying.

one of my staff at work is in her sixties and her mum and dad have turned 90. They are both very frail but have strong sound minds which has made their daughter's life very difficult. She lost her own hubby after 33 years together last year and is still dealing with her grief. They are very unsympathetic and as old people can be, selfish. They have systematically shot down every attempt she has made to get them help cos of their fierce independence. She has no life of her own. Finally, this week it has come to a head. Dad cannot now walk and is almost blind and very deaf. Mum is very very frail and wobbly. They have finally conceded they need home help but she is having to battle to get it as they have scuppered it so many times. The cost of getting all the services to them so they can stay in their own home is eating into her own pension and savings as well as theirs and despite their frailness could still live for years. Meantime the stress on her health is very apparent and getting worse. It is a horrible thing to have to put a parent in a home but sometimes the alternatives are worse. I can see their daughter being found dead alone in her own home and them still trucking on. She has no other family for support.

Hello Dark Horse, what a harrowing story!
My god, and I thought I had it rough, this girl (woman) is very lucky to have someone so understanding as yourself. I am in a funny position as I dont live in the UK and it makes things more difficult in looking after my mother, sometimes I have even flown over to take her for a doctors appointment. I try to get over as many times as I can and am very lucky that some of my old Wigan friends go round for a chat or do a bit of shopping. My mother is over here at the moment and is as happy as larry, but she's not getting any younger (88) and I would never put her in a home. There is another member of my family living in Wigan, but he has "not got the time* as he is working to hard as it is.
You couldnt make it up! I hope things turn out better for your friend dark horse, Take care Paul

Hello again, paul. Have had an idea. Find out the name of the pub(s) your brother drinks in and then get someone to go in and tell all the regulars what he is doing to your mother. I am sure that he will be shunned (sent to coventry) until he starts to go and visit her. It would work down here, why not up north?

Just been reading the thread "Then and Now" about life in Miry Lane and Wallgate years ago and it seems to me that the situation regarding pauls mother would not have been allowed to happen in those times. The neighbours and friends would all have rallied round and one of the men or perhaps the parish priest would have had a "quiet" word with J nicholson reminding him about his responsibilities.
That in my view is part of todays social problems, the breakdown of family life. Life was much harder for folks living in the 30's, 40's and 50's but they could all teach us a thing or two about that much banded about word Respect!

Hello cherryandwhite, jellied eels, better than tripe and onions! What I just wanted to say is that the Krays were a bunch of thugs and gangsters who hurt and even murdered people and no one can try to defend that. After saying that, the East-End was a lot safe for the majority of people especially old ladies like Mrs. Nicholson, there were no drugs, muggings were practically unheard of, and if anyone hurt an OAP they would be signing their death warrant. If Pauls brother had lived in the East-End 40 years ago, he would definately have gone round to look after his sick mother. The alternative would have been emigration!

Hello Coccium, I'm sure that I have met you, but can't be 100% certain. I was born in Wigan (hardybutts) and lived in Sovereign Road. My Dad died when I was 8 and my mother married again. Hence the name Green, I was christened Forshaw, my new dad was in the army , so was in and out of a lot of different schools up and down the county and in Germany. I used to knock about with (among others) John Sharples, Billy Telford, Billy Melling, Terry Hollingsworth, Ken Blackledge (RIP), Harold Roper, Keith Winard, Jimmy Priest and a lot more I have unfortunately forgotten. Moved back to Wigan (permenantly) last year after 11 years in Bolton. Joined WW because I read about old Mrs. Nicholson and how her youngest son is treating her. I know the other brother Paul, and its not fair whats happening. You seem to be one of the "Old Boys", is there nothing you can do Coccium, otherwise people will forget and start talking about Dave Wheelen again!

I think this thread has gone awry. The bottom line is, if someone has to force this b*****rd to look after his mother, do you really think that's what his mother would want? She's better off with other people, friends, welfare or otherwise that would do it willingly. And do you honestly think that someone who seems to have no moral responsibilites at all is capable of looking after an elderly person. He would probably let her down and neglect her and that would be even worse. I just hope she gets the care she needs.

Thanks for popping in to my mothers when your in Wigan, I know you work long hours, but if it wasn't for friends like you and a couple more that help I/we would be realy up stream without the proverbial paddle! Anyway will be coming back again in July, the customs in Manchester airport think I'm an international playboy or drugs courier because I'm there so often, I'm even on first name terms with the railway station ticket seller. Look after yourselfs and give my regards to Amy (not)

Hiya Paul, tell me when your next coming over to Wigan again and we'll meet up and have a drink together. Was talking to an old mate of mine (AL Caine) who used to play at Wigan Tech. in St Judes last week and he told me the best thing is to get in touch with someone at the Wigan Observer or Evening Post who could maybe write something not to slanderous that would shanme your brother into going round and seeing his elderly mother. p.s. have heard that a lot of people working for Heinz have heard/read this thread, maybe they will say something to him.

Went and done some shopping for my mum and then took her out for a ride round, so its beers all round when I come over.

Have read this thread a few times. To be honest I think apart from immediate family telling the errant son to get stuffed, no one else would gain from tackling him. Definately not his poor mum, likely he'd resent being made to see her, and that'd make her miserable around him.Unfortunately we can't pick our families, mores the pity in cases like this.I'm sure the good son more than makes up for the other prat .
Personally if he was my son I'd tell him to sling his hook if he did turn up after all this time. You can't replace mums , shame on him for wasting these last few precious years.

Hi empress, just read your message and have to say there's more sense in your comments than the whole of this thread put together. I dont want anyone to force or threaten him to go round, but my mothers 88 years young and confined to a wheelchair, so if I dont go over to England every three weeks, she dosen't get out of the house and although she is 88, she has all of her faculties, so its like being in prison for her and if it wasn't for the good neighbours and friends
doing her shopping and her neice doing a little cleaning, she would be lost. All of the people who help my mother are all working, one of them works 6 days a week and another one runs a stall on Wigan market, so its not always easy for them as well. I just dont know what to do, but thanks for bothering to write. Paul

Paul, you may have already tried this but if not could you not get help from social services? They can send somebody round everyday so she has someone to talk to and maybe even take her out for the day.

Paul, i know what you mean about being very proud and not asking for help from anyone.
My fella's mum was the same and at first she went mad when he contacted the social services.
She was vicious to the poor woman who come & was always threatning to "kick 'em up the backside with me slipper!" it was awful at first. But after half an hour of talking she agreed to humour us and try it for "ONE DAY ONLY". . . that was 8weeks ago lol and now i don't think she could be without them, it makes the world of difference for her having somebody who will sit there and talk for a while. And it puts everyones mind at rest knowing she's safe.

Sorry for going on just thought i'd try and help, but every person is different and you know your mum better than anyone.
I hope things look up soon *hugs*

Levi, i'm sorry you had to go through that with your mother & her sisters it must have been hard.

Cherryandwhite,
"I mean what excuse can you come up with for missing your own sisters funeral"

I'm not talking abut Levi's experience just funerals in general (as only Levi will know the reasons why). Although it does seem harsh some people simply can't face saying goodbye like that. It takes alot of strength to go to a funeral especially somebody close, but it also takes strength to not go, knowing you will NEVER get that chance again and may live to regret it.
Some people simply cannot cope with the last memories of their loved ones being lowered into the ground like that.
I've only been to one burial and it's hard not to get those images in my head when i visit to put flowers down.

Saying that, i suppose theres also alot of people out there who genuinely just do not care enough to go.

Hello tinkerbell, thanks for the advice. I did once contact the social services and they were sympathetic and sent a home-help around to make the bed and give my mother her breakfast., but after two weeks this lady went on her holidays and her replacement never showed up. So my mother (without my knowledge) rang the social and told them she was now "better" and didnt need anyone anymore! I only found out when I returned to England a month later. As you say every person is different and as my mother says "the neighbours are always popping in" BTW the neighbours are also all over 75. Hugs to you to tinkerbell, take care Paul

The Wooden Bowl

I guarantee you will remember the tale of the Wooden Bowl tomorrow, a week from now, a month from now, a year from now.
A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and
four-year old grandson. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered. The family ate together at the table.
But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.
The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. "We must do something about father," said the son. "I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor."
So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There,
Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner.
Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl!
When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometime he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food.
The four-year-old watched it all in silence. One evening before
supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the
floor. He asked the child sweetly, "What are you making?"
Just as sweetly, the boy responded, "Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up." The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.
The words so struck the parents so that they were speechless Then
tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done.
That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the table cloth soiled.
On a positive note, I've learned that, no matter what happens, how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow.
I've learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles four things: a rainy day, the elderly, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.
I've learned that, regardless of your relationship with your parents,
you'll miss them when they're gone from your life.
I've learned that making a "living" is not the same thing as making a "life."
I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.
I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher's mitt
on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back.
I've learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you. But if
you focus on your family, your friends, the needs of others, your work and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you.
I've learned that whenever I decide something with an open heart, I
usually make the right decision.
I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one.
I've learned that every day, you should reach out and touch someone.
People love that human touch -- holding hands, a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back.
I've learned that I still have a lot to learn!

Hey, Gareth, Who are you calling 'bonkers'? Talk about t'kettle calling t'pot black. Which one of those 'john cooper clarke' poems do you think refers to Geoff? I reckon the 'Health Fanatic' is a bit 'Geoff' at the moment (he's the only one of us losing weight, so he must be doing something right!)

PS .... there's two l's in personally, Gareth. Come on, don't let the side down.

Hi Cherry, actually we have just come back from having a few days in Shepton Mallet. Don't suppose anybody from Wigan would know where that is, so no need to phone a friend its in Somerset not too far away from Yeovil. Beutifull countryside and not a coal tip in sight, the crisps are not soo good though!

Hiya Prince, believe it or not I know where Shepton Mallet is! I took part in a sponsered walk over Salsbury Plains sometime in the eighties and we stayed the night in a pub in Shepton Mallet and I think it was called "The Charlton" the only bad point was the ale (bitter) it was rubbish, no wonder they all drink cider

Replied: 18th Sep 2007 at 12:33

Hello Snowman, yes I know the pub well, there's only four pubs in the whole of shepton so its not so hard, actually we stay in the Charlton Hotel, but it has no connection to the aformentioned pub, there all charlton something or other because they are all situated somewhere in Charlton Road which is about 4 miles long. There's also a very beutifull pub with a thatched roof near our hotel but I've forgotten the name and their crisps are rubbish!

Hello WinWin, just read your post this morning and can only sympathise with your prediciment, you have to have the wisdom of King Solomon sometimes, although have to say danni and one or two others on Wigan World always write some very intelligent advice. I myself have to confront what to do when my mother returns to the UK this month after 3 months in Switzerland. Allthough pillored from pillar to post, her son absolutely refuses to have anything to do with my mother who is now 88 and very infirm. He also refuses to say why he no longer wishes to stay in contact with her, but its possible that he just cant find the time to, wash, clean, shop, chat etc. There's is always 2 sides to an argument, but every time she feells a little under the weather, I think what would he feel like if she passed away and he hadn't made the effort to see her one last time before its too late. Sorry about the grammer and long-winded reply, not used to writing in English any more. All the best Paul Nicholson

Hello franny, just read your comments regarding looking after old relatives. My mother who is nearly 90 has been staying with us over here for the past 3 months and I dont know what to do or who to contact for help when she has to return to the UK later this month. Ideally if I could get someone to visit her once a day just to make sure that she is alright, it would be great. She will not have a home-help in the house although I have a number of friends that can run errands and do a bit of shopping for her. The only problem is that most of them are ex-bouncers, and because of their size frighten the life out of the other elderly residents when they walk down the street. You mentioned Help the Aged, but I dont know if they have an office in Wigan, but will find out. Any further info. is more than appreciated. Best wishes Paul.

Help the Aged should have local contacts Paul and they have a number of advocates. CSCI in Newcastle as I say are very good with an excellent website and you can also go on their mailing list which will give you more contacts. As I say, I would try Help the Aged first and if you have problems contact me on here and I will do some ringing around for you.

It is one of the hardest things to do, but you have to think of what is best for them. My mum lived in sheltered accomodation. She became increasingly confused and less mobile as time passed. We contacted Social Services who helped out greatly. she had a carer who camein the morning, washed and dress her, a lady who came at tea time and some one at bed time. The ones who let her down badly were Meals on Wheels. They would come and leave her dinner in the kitchen. As she could not get up, she went without food, until the tea lady came. She wouls ask if mum had not eaten her dinner. Mum would just say no, but meaning she couldn't get to it. After three days she managed to tell the meal people to leave it in front of her. So they did, but wouldn't get her a fork. Luckly a neighbour saw her door open and found mum trying to eat her dinner with a pen. They phoned us and we played holy hell with Meal on Wheels. We were told it was not their policy to hand out forks! that same week , Mum went into hospital, and her social worker just told us she was not safe to go home. Her confusion was worse, and incontinance had set in. she sorted out everything for us, and mum is now in Acorns Nursing home in Hindley. The staff there are wonderful. Mum lives in her own little world, but she is clean well fed and warm. i don't know what these girls are paid but it's not enough!

Just read in the sunday paper about the scandal of 1 million British pensioners left to suffer alone. Apparently more than a million are living lonely and isolated lives regulary spending long periods of time without talking to anyone. Up to 300,000 old people have only got contact with the milkman or postman and the goverment is thinking about cutting down costs by scrapping help with free meals, washing, dressing cleaning and shopping. Withdrawal of home help assistance will only increase their isolation. In the same paper there's an article saying Muslim inmates at a jail in Leeds are suing the Home Office for 2 million because they were offered (from a menu selection of four) the choice of ham sandwiches. You couldnt make it up!

"Prince, can you paint?" this was asked of me by Snowman on the 29th of November and then he's having a go at me for being too flippant! Get a life says Mr. Snowman. I contribute (read/write to two other newsgroups as well as WW. Cockney Pride and Orchard Somerset and could more or less guarantee that should a problem arise concerning an elderly local there would be a LOT more input in trying to help the old lady than has been the case with WW. I actually met the son of Mrs. Nicholson in Switzerland when his family helped us after our car had broken down. My comments were only an attempt to try and repay a favour, but after comments like those made by mr. snowman I will not write anything else again!

The old lady is still looking after herself and she's nearly 90! If my mother was still alive I wouldnt ignore her or leave it up to good neighbours to visit or look after her. What with "Looking after old Relatives" and the afore mentioned thread concerning anti-social behaviour my picture of Wigan as a caring and good neighbourly town is taking a bit of a battering. Is there no "big" men in Wigan who could sort these problems out for a "small" price, and (apart from Mrs. Nicholsons problem) where are the police when you need them?

Hey princy, Wigan have drawed Chelsea in the FA cup on the 27th. Why dont you come on up to Wigan and show yourself. I for one will guarantee you a good time and will even get you a ticket for the match. You will be able to stay over night in one of our best hotels (Brunells) and after the match you will be able to see the best that Wigan has to offer, King St, Harry's bar etc. All in all a great night out and I'm sure you will be able to keep your southern mates enthralled for hours when you tell them all about it. (you might even bump into your mate Jimmy Nicholson) Let me know if your coming as soon as you can so I can have a word with one or two of my mates working on the doors to tell them to let you in even if your wearing a Chelsea shirt and eating crisps

In Fridays Dail Mail there's a readers letter entitled Too Many Die Alone. Apparently there's a new name for old people left all on their own, its called the Eleanor Rigby syndrome and it means no visits, no calls and no mourners at your funeral, unless of course a legacy is forthcoming. I'm a witness to this kind of behavior. What sort of a nation have we become?

It's the "I'm alright Jack syndrome - and bugger anybody else". It's a global thing I think especially in the 'developed western countries'. Where the almighty dollar/pound is the be all and all and commercialism, materialism rules. We don't have time for those less fortunate than ourselves and are too selfish to even think of what it might be like to be in their shoes?? Unfortunately it happens here in Australia, not as bad as the STates yet where oldies with dementia are wheeled to the door of hospitals and dumped there with no ID.

Hello ozzielass, your right there but it wasn't always like that. Even I remember my parents (and other relatives) joining in to look after my grandparents when they could no longer look after themselves. I cannot believe that some people (offspring) could be so callous as to dump their parents outside of a hospital with no ID, how would they be able to sleep at night after that?

Hiya Paul, good to hear from you again. It dosen't matter how you try to disguise it, but your brother (the magistrate) is a bloody disgrace! You just keep on looking after your mum and leave him to wallow in his own selfish thoughts and behaviour. I notice he's neverbothered to reply to any of the comments on WW even though he reads it nearly every day

Paul, sorry been a while answering this post, now I know this is definitely a Guinness Book of Records attempt? Have been reading with interest and take your point about keeping the pressure on a certain person. Beginning to feel like I am part of an episode of Coronation Street or Neighbours!

No I did not go to St Josephs - I am not THAT old, oops sorry big sis. I started at ST. Edwards.

Cherry and white, don't know about Frank Ifield but I think Max Bygraves has taken up residence here on the Gold Coast Queensland. Think he does a couple of concerts a year. What have we done to deserve that?

How does you mother stomach muesli, can't touch it myself, reminds me too much of porridge. REminds me of the slop they give people in jail - not that I have been there. Hope you put some nice fresh strawberries on it to give it a bit of flavour.

We don't have 'crisps' here in OZ, they are called 'chips' and chips are 'hot chips'. Need a few lessons in English down here, keep trying to educate them but it is a loosing battle.

No cherry, it is definitely not freezing here, been a cool 26 C here today. Might have to start closing the windows at night soon. Magic, went for a walk after work, 7pm, sleeveless top is all you need.

Muesli? It's a toss up between that and tripe as to which I would like the least. Have to be dying of starvation to try any.

Think I've got one of Frank Ifields LP's in my collection. Started to collect them while people are selling them off for about $1 each (50p). Better than a CD any day.

He used to live in Montrose Avenue but got married very young same as Mick Hinnigan who finished up in St Annes. I never lived in that part of the world, but attended Thomas Moore, so knew more or less everyone from the estates. Billy Hinnigan comes over to Switzerland every now and then, but dosent like cheese or chicken wings, and the beer is very expensive, so after a week is ready to go home again. Northern Corresondent!! Up north if there's a story about London, do they say "over to our southern correspondent" and if not why?

Good idea suenye, bet you live an exiting life. We have people like you in the UK as well, you can read their comments in the local papers: shocked, milton Keynes or disgusted, Worthing. Have always had the feeling these people or more to be pitied than anything else especially when they later try to justify their comments. WW is a free forum with free speech, why the call for a "moderator"? This thread contains no bad language, no racism or any other prohibited forms. If you dont like it leave it and carry on complaining somewhere else (newspapers perhaps)?

I cannot understand your stance on this thread, if you dont like or agree with it, keep away. I dont understand people like yourself who always seem to be against things calling for "censorship" or moderators". Why dont you set up your own web site, then you can "moderate" as much as you like?

Snowman and gforce here is the current situation. JN has been suspended on full pay after allegations that he falsified documents relating to one of his relatives with the effect that the lady in question was putting in an 9 hour shift, when in fact she was tucked up in bed. He has also been accused of abusing his responsibilities relating to temporary staff (usually young women) by shouting and belittling them. Its not the first time that he has been suspended and what will happen is that after a week or two when the fuss has died down, he will once again return to work. He has got some very powerful "friends" at Heinz, Kitt Green.

Thanks for that danni, I didnt even know they has a code of conduct. Abuse and Harassment – Heinz does not tolerate any form of physical or sexual harassment or abuse of its employees. The problem is how do you enforce the rules if people in higher positions turn a blind eye. The poor buggers who were bullied couldnt do a bloody thing about it because they were from an agency. If the case of him falsely booking in his daughter hadnt come up, the bullying would still be going on today.

Replied: 29th Mar 2008 at 17:41

there's also this bit

Equal Employment Opportunity/ Diversity – No person or group of people should be made to feel unwanted or unwelcome in a Heinz workplace because of discrimination or stereotyping. Heinz encourages and fosters a diverse global workforce. Heinz believes that its employees should be employed and advanced on the basis of their ability to do the job. It is therefore the continuing policy of Heinz to afford equal employment opportunities to all qualified employees and applicants. In accordance with this policy, all personnel decisions, including but not limited to those relating to recruitment, hiring, training, promotion, compensation, and benefits, will continue to be made based solely upon an employee’s or applicant’s qualifications, skills, and abilities and without regard to any condition or characteristic that is not job-related. In addition, every Heinz location is required to have a policy prohibiting illegal discrimination, including harassment, and an accompanying set of policies establishing a procedure for reporting and investigating complaints, prohibiting retaliation, and providing for appropriate disciplinary action for violations.

Danni (or anyone else) do you know what the outcome would be if a magistrate was convicted of an offence. What would be the legal position and would it depend on the offence commited as to whether the magistrate would be forced to resign or not?

Replied: 1st Apr 2008 at 11:23

Cherry, this is what it says in Wigan library, its a bit old though: Magistrates must command the confidence of the public, have personal integrity and have the respect and trust of others. This means that, for example, it is unlikely that you will be appointed if you have been in trouble with the Police, are untrustworthy or an undischarged bankrupt. Serious motoring offences or persistent offending will also lead to being turned down, but it dosent say what would happen should a sitting magistrate be convicted of breaking the lawbe a disqualification. Hope this helps.

hollo cherryand white,no they wont sweep it under the carpet if allegations are found to be true they will do their own disciplinary, which would most probably lead to dismissal.if this happens it will not be on record of what they are dismissed for it would probably be "surplus to requirements" because heinz do not like to give anybody a criminal record.heinz workers and viewers of this thread will know but will the judiciary know

Good point gforce and I can understand Heinz point of view about not wanting to give anyone a criminal record. However there must be certain types of offences where they are obliged to inform the authorities especially if one of their employees involved is sitting on a bench of law dishing out fines and community service. It will realy be interesting as to what Heinz will do (or not) in this case.

I have been reading this board it seems forever and I sympathise with Mrs. Nicholson and can only hope that I am not in a similar position when I get old even though I have four grown children and two grandchildren. I feel that I have got to comment on the last couple of views given. Working for Heinz can be very rewarding, socially and financially. It is a good company, but there are some things that are wrong. Agency and temporary personnel can be bullied and threatened. Sometimes it’s easier to take no notice especially when you don’t want to get into trouble yourself. Without naming names I hope that ANY person who gets caught bullying should be made an example of and shown the door. My personal opinion is that this person will be quietly moved to some other part of the plant until everyone has forgotten and told to be more careful in the future.

Cherrywhite, I wouldnt stand by on the street if I say someone being beaten up, but its not quite the same as seeing someone being picked on at work. Sometimes the people being employed on a tempory basis are only there for a week or two and you risk being branded a "troublemaker" by the overseer or head of department. Its just not worth it risking your own job, especially at my age. Once I'm retired though, I think I'll write a book about some things.

I seem to remember at the very beginning of this thread people saying they were going to report the chap to Heinz, I dont know what they were reporting him for as I still cant see what it has to do with anyone else what happens within a family. If the lady is so neglected why has her son not called in social services or better still pay someone to see to her. we dont know what has gone on in that family in the past between mother and son. If he hasnt called round by now he is never going to. Thats his choice.

Hello Gene Hunt, I thought that I would like to reply to your last posting. Having read the (very long!) number of comments, slightly knowing the person in question and spoken to people at work about the situation I have to say that no matter what has gone on in the past you only have one mother, I think we can both agree on that. Secondly, if the other brother has to come from Sweden to take his mother out shopping or to the doctors, then thats a bad state of affairs in my book. The fact that the person involved is a magistrate just seems to make the situation worse. I would give anything to be able to tell my mother some of the things that I wanted to say, but didnt when she was alive. Everbody is entitled to their own point of view. I'm sorry, I dont want to upset anyone but thats how I feel.

Hello paul, just wanted to tell you that Heinz have "asked" your brother for his resignation and "no further action will be taken". He's a very lucky man and will probably remain a magistrate, but he wont be missed by many at Heinz including me, he was an out and out bully, hope that you dont take this the wrong way. p.s. have seen your email address and will drop you a line, take care.

If it were my mother I wouldnt be on a message board asking strangers to tell my brothers employer what a bad son he is.Why can the mother not get a taxi to the doctors or use patient services for a small charge? There are many accusations in this thread but no answers.

Hello Gene, just wanted to reply to your previous comments without getting into a slanging match. First of all I didnt start this thread nor have I replied too many times to comments made be they nagative or positive. When I'm not in England I DO pay people to do the shopping for my mother, I also have asked nobody for advice on this thread. My "problem" is that I live abroad and so cannot be there everyday for my mother and that is the reason that she has been over here for the past 5 months. My mother is also wheelchair bound and at 88 years old its not always aesy to find someone to accompany her to the doctors/hospital etc. I have never told anyone to tell my brothers employers what a bad/good person he is in fact Ihave made no critisism whatsoever. I will continue to take care of my mother even if it means returning to the UK to look after her. I hope this has cleared up some of the misunderstandings. Take care, Paul

I fully understand that its difficult to find people but elder care services are there to be used, and in your mums case should be used fully as she is obviously in great need of them. I agree with every word youve said Gene, I could get patient care transport involved, social services, care line etc, but your forgetting one thing, social intercourse. So many old (and proud) people are living days on end without seeing (conversing) with another human being and thats the biggest problem. I know its an old cliche, but its still true, you only have one mother. Take care Paul

No you are right she needs to socially interact with others so why not get her into a day centre she will be picked up and brought home, have her lunch etc and socially interact with other people I think they pay a couple of quid a time or if they are on basic pension its free, again social services will arrange it for you.

Gene Hunt, I cant believe your comments. Is that your answer to everything, social services. The mans trying to do things bending over backwards and all you can do is critise and shout for social services. If my mother was alive today I'd look after her myself and let people like you depend upon social services. Give credit where credits due!

I am in that situation and it is a 24 hours a day job but I will continue to do it. After 66 years of marriage and the shared love and happy times, these are the things you just cannot forget and take the easy option.

Have just read your posting Norman and I have to say I take my hat off to you. They talk about heroes (rugby and soccer) and other "celebreties, but believe you me you are the real hero! I can imagine that some days you dont know where to turn just keep on trying my friend and do your best. "Dignity in old age is something we all hope for and deserve." I only hope when my (or my wife) turn comes someone like you will be there for us instead of a person like gene hunt blabbering on about social services all the time. God bless you Norman, I'm not very religious but I will say a prayer for you and your wife tonight.

To showman,
Thanks a lot for those comments.
I remember seeing old people sitting outside the family home smoking a pipe etc seemingly without a care in the world.
Just being looked after and being with the family brought them contentment.
How times change.
Yes, it is very difficult and wearying at times but that's life

Hello Norman, I read your message this morning at work and can only say I feel really sorry for you and your situation. You didn’t mention if you’ve got any family or not, but one thing I will say is that some of the comments on Wigan World have helped me enormously. I know there are a lot of strange postings about “crisps and “cats” on here but all in all the WW community are a good bunch of people. Cherryandwhite, nightshift, coccium, 1934 granada ozzielass, keno, sydneylass, wigan 1957 and Danni have all posted uplifting and positive comments on this (long) thread and I am most grateful. Sometimes you can tell from the way people write that they care and would help if they could and its always better to have someone to listen whenever you want to get things off your chest. Your not alone, keep in touch with the people I have mentioned previously and you will feel better for it. Wishing you and your wife all the very best Paul

JP is barred from bench

View GalleryA magistrate has been forced to stand down after he was sacked from his day job at Heinz over allegations of gross misconduct.
It follows an investigation into claims that batches of baby food were signed off to leave the plant without quality and content checks.

It is believed that the signatures of staff responsible for running quality checks were also questioned.

James Nicholson, 54, was employed as a supervisor at Heinz and had worked as a supervisor in the baby food section for about a year. He has worked for the company for more than a decade.

It is understood that he plans to appeal against Heinz's decision to dismiss him.

Mr Nicholson is a JP at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates' Court, helping other magistrates in determining offenders' sentences for a range of
crimes.

A source at the Heinz factory said Mr Nicholson had faced a number of accusations but that the company decided to discipline him only in regard to quality control checks.

Heinz refused to comment other than to say that Mr Nicholson no longer works for the company.

Mr Nicholson has not sat as a magistrate at Wigan and Leigh Magistrates Court for the past two weeks, since the court became aware he had been suspended from work.

Now that he has been sacked he could also face being permanently
removed from his role as a magistrate.

A spokesman for Wigan and Leigh Magistrates' Court confirmed that Mr Nicholson was not currently sitting as a magistrate.

She said: "Whilst he is pursuing an appeal against his dismissal and until all appeal channels have been resolved he will not be sitting as a magistrate.

"At that stage there would be a conduct investigation hearing by magistrate and non-magistrate members of the Wigan and Leigh Advisory Committee, and if they feel it is appropriate, as a result of conduct issues raised by his work disciplinary hearing, they can recommend his removal as a magistrate to the Lord Chancellor."

Mr Nicholson was appointed a magistrate last August and has been sitting since January.

Paul, your better off telling her before she gets back, it will be less of a shock and all her neighbours and friends will know anyway. However, the longer your away, the less fuss there will be and everything will probably have died down.

Unfortunately both my parents have passed on so I cant realy comment on cherryandwhites views, but I would like to know what happens if an elderly relative (mother, father) refuses to go into a home or sheltered accomodation. Does the local council force them to move and what are their rights under present law?

Replied: 23rd Apr 2008 at 11:32

No-one can be forced to move out of their rented accommodation unless there is provision within the terms of the lease/tenancy agreement. Old people could not be forced to move out of rented accommodation into residential care unless they were "sectioned" under the mental health act. Other than that, a court would always look at the provisions of the tenancy agreement first. This is aside from the moral issues, of course.

Hiya mighty antelope, you know a lot more about this than the majority of folk. My question is: what would happen if the old person(s) couldnt look after themselves anymore, but had all their faculties about them, would they be forced to go into a home against their will?

Replied: 23rd Apr 2008 at 13:27

Posted by: mighty antelope (298)

Hello nightshift. The answer would be probably not, but it does depend on the terms of their occupation of the existing property. So, if the lease or agreement made reference to 'not being able to live independently', for example, that would be a clause which the landlord could use to force a move. However, I've never seen any such clause, and it is of course possible to support people in their own homes through the use of other agencies. In fact this is the way govt policy has moved - partly because of the disruption it causes to the individual but, cynically, because it is the cheaper option for local authorities. On the other hand, if you wanted to move a relative out of their home and into a residential or nursing home because you personally felt it was better for them, you would either have to persuade them to relinquish their tenancy, be granted a power of attorney (to act on their behalf - difficult without v good reason)or have them sectioned(!). Putting all that aside, I would recommend gentle persuasion - if you say something often enough, and it makes sense, people will generally accept it as an inevitability, especially if it is meant well.
