Just been reading the thread "Then and Now" about life in Miry Lane and Wallgate years ago and it seems to me that the situation regarding pauls mother would not have been allowed to happen in those times. The neighbours and friends would all have rallied round and one of the men or perhaps the parish priest would have had a "quiet" word with J nicholson reminding him about his responsibilities.
That in my view is part of todays social problems, the breakdown of family life. Life was much harder for folks living in the 30's, 40's and 50's but they could all teach us a thing or two about that much banded about word Respect!
