Well, I wake up every morning - and it's still there. So I go back to sleep!
The bad tghing is, I'm getting used to it!

Talking about shaving Dougie, when my wif's dad died, and we cleared his place in St.Annes out, there was box upon box of
"Bob Norburn Shaving Cream". There must've been a thousand jars of it, with a big wad of labels ready to be stuck on the jars.
I didn't think anything of it and simply left it there, along with most of the other stuff. Now I find it sells for over £18 for 100ml!

Well that was a big flop I tried it on DG 10 to see if I could get a bit of movement on the thread, then bambam opened DG 11 so I uploaded on here instead that's also been a flop, don't see why I should leave the photo on

O.K. lads lets try this one,--as young lads on the estate everything had to be passed down from the older lads, I remember to this day a place you could find them, Ernie-nuts anyone remember the place and how you would find them bet you could still find them there

For anyone that doesn't know what to look for they have a small carrot like leaf about 1" in size, on a thick well established grassed area by a wooded area the Dell,Turpin, Sharpell pen going to DG wood, you just peel the sod back they are just under the surface, always remember to replace the sod for the next time, can only add they are lovely

The link as no resemblance to Ernie-nuts as we call them as its not a nut its a seed, in fact it tells you there are very few nuts as most are edible seeds with a hard shell round, a horse chestnut is a true inedible seed, and to be very careful when eating any under ground seed as they could kill you, even the Blue Bell could be mistaken for a edible nut when dried out, we have eaten hundreds of ernie-nuts and would do again

gaffer I think May have been brought up with a silver spoon in his mouth not like us by the scruff of the neck, he would have known about Ernie-nuts and how and where to find them, like I've said before everything was passed down both good & bad, remember before the outcropping you had to go through the farmyard over two railway sleepers in to the wood, I bet you even remember the field drain pipe where we could get lovely cool water to drink

Why on I would like to ask all Greene-rs And Ex-Greene-rs how do they fell about a Ram-Sammy when all this lock down is over in the Presidential, Bolton Road, Ashton, I'm coming to my 80th Birthday soon it would have to be a date in the future I sergest a Monday afternoon @ 1.00pm mid June we should be getting the all clear hopefully by then, I would buy everyone the first pint obviously it wouldn't be for my birthday just an excuse for a meet-up and a chat, meet new friends, Talk of the past, Remembering people we had forgotten about, how knows what will come up

To celebrate my 40 years they gave me £800, I made continental breakfast in the Canteen one Friday morning from 8.30am, followed by lunch in the Wheatley at end of shift, as I was the first man to do 40 years service at Reeds Wigan asked the works Manager was he making it up to a £1.000 as all the sift were going across the road for a bonding session after work, I was putting £200 over the bar for drinks if you say no look on the notice board later, he did give an extra £100 making £300 for drinks. bar man started playing funny buggers but we soon shut him up

Hi Dougie,yes we lived in the end house on Poplar Ave, had 2 brothers Allan & Billy sadly both passed away. Dad (Benny ) was a window cleaner for a spell. Would I remember you?

Ok Dougie just looking at a post of yours from 2010 downall green to Ashton over mill fields and the railway bridge, used to play over there all the time in the 60s. Brought back nice memories.

bernice was gwillams wife who sadly passed on a couple of months ago .

Whups I remembered after posting,

You may have been told when the estate was first built they came from all over the Ashton area to live on the estate, new younger children going to rectory and Our-ladies, older ones had already started secondary schools, boy did they stick together no fighting or bulling between them selves on the estate, they stuck like glue at secondary school helping us new starters settle in as up to 20 off the estate would start after the summer holidays, they would never fight your battle but make sure you did a good job by egging you if you got into one

hi Peter i knew your family very well .your Billy used to knock about with us.he was a little bit younger than us ,he was a belting lad .I remem ber going to school bingo at Our Ladies and we won Jackpot and we won three other prizes.we won 27pound 10 shilling,he made me go home to tell your Mam,then they would not think we had been stealing.I also remember your enid getting knocked down.Gpd that was a long time ago.anyhow welcome.

As a good guess bam bam I would say 1944 followed by Bryn then Landgate, I would only have been 4 then so don't remember much,y0ur Dad was one of the big lads I talk about and his best mate Jimmy Dean, he's still going strong and still puling me to peace's every time we meet, if we ever get to the Presidential I hope the lads 80+ turn up for everyone to meet them they were a grate bunch ? Have you met the Twins Alf & Jimmy and all their mates

Thanks peterp, and Dougie , yes I remember Alf and jimmy who lived on corner of island in elm ave also remember their parents, I looked at that photo on north Ashton pics with the lads on but only know Jim & Alf, also remember deans on island my mother & father was always there as I was growing up I know there was quite a few of them.

dav annie duffy was one of the 1st people on here & she said that there was only 3 houses built when they moved in . it was 1947.

Can I tell you about the man that lived the house before you Tommy Gregg or maybe next door, He would take bets in the old village club house you may not remember it, not on football or horse racing or anything like that, but on anyone fast-enough to smack his face with two hands,the contestant sat on a two armed chair, he then placed both his forearms on the arms with the hands out stretched Tommy would then place his head on the mans knees between the mans hands no the word go, the man had 1or2 minutes to try to smack Tommy as hard as he wished they say Tommy never lost, others would try the other way round

I was thinking you lived going up rectory road just after Pies Shop Area, Jimmy Jameson was he the manager of the Co-op across the road, did you live in one of the four going the other way or was it one of the semi's,

Talking of characters remember Andy Sprat the Dad now he was a character as you may know or may not,

one day he put a small round table in the middle of the dance floor in the village club placed a full pint on it what doing Andy, I'm going outside coming in drink that pint without my feet touching the floor or my hands touching the glass and out again, after a lot of talk,he went outside bang the door opened and in came Andy on all fours walked across pick the glass up with his mouth drunk the beer turn round and went out

1947 when Duffys moved in the last house on their side was Spratts on the other sidfe Pownalls was the last the rest were still being built

I knew Jimmy Duffy who lived on Wigan Road (540's odd number side) at Bryn and, I think, he'd married a Pownall as the neighbours were related and were Pownalls.

I have just been looking at some old family documents and there is a Tenancy Agreement between Ashton Council and my grandparents John & Clara Ward. They were the first family to live in this house (Blue Bell end of Elm Ave)when they were newly built - my cousin still lives in the house. The agreement says they were to move in on 2 Nov 1946, so that gives us an idea as to when this part of the estate was finished.
It is actually named on the papers as Rectory Road Housing Site.

Ashpad , did Sprats not live next door to Pjones900 next to the end house in Popular Avenue on the right,at one time

annie duffy moved into no3 hawthorn ave in 1947 & lived there until she died & her daughter tracy still lives in that house.

Hi dougie, there is three houses after pye's shop at bottom of rectory rd we lived in end house with the driveway which had access to backs, these houses are on your films from mill farm looking up to rectory rd, next door to us was joe brogan and Chris hurst not sure how long brogan's was there but Chris hurst had been there a long time.

Forgot to mention dougie you probably know brogan's, Dave I believe still has butchers shop at bryn cross, his brother ste and his wife Lynne lived at bryn but sadly are no longer with us.

Whups I understand now your only talking about the top end Hawthorn area, as by 1947 as I said the bottom half of the estate was well established by 1947, if I remember rightly they had even moved the mortar mixer off the croft to the top end, the houses were built with Mortar mixed on site,(crushed cinders, lime, cement, turned out blue-black cant remember them adding sand, Bert well know as it was almost in his back garden

up the drive to the field run along Pye's,Fosters,Club wall we lived top house, also that's the way we went to the Club save walking round, over back garden fence to the wall and onto the Bowling Green

Hi dougie, there is a lot of land at rear of pye's shop as a youngster I used to work on pig farm for Regi Lavin who had shop in 70s, he used get his pig food of his relation Arthur Lavin and I used go Arch Lane on Arthur's field to fill bags of rotting potatoes, Regi killed pigs and would have them hanging in shop for people to buy, obviously you wouldn't get away with that today.

Never heard of a jimmy Duffy marrying my side of Pownalls so may have been uncle Joes from stubshaw cross they all lived up there at one time.

Hi Malc,yes I remember when me and Kevin went shooting rats in blue bell and gypsy woods, he was good mate of mine Kevin even though we used to argue when we couldn't find any rats to kill blaming one another as to whose idea it was to have chosen location, we used split up and hunt one another I still full of scars and holes where Kevin shot me, ha ha crazy days I miss the old estate there was some good lads on there and bluebell times when we all met then went into Ashton, do you ever see ste Hayes he was old buddy of mine and derek higham I was sorry to hear Colin had passed on he was another good mate of mine, when all this pandemic is over we will have to ave a pint or two.

Dougie/Bert, I know it would be difficult to find out who the first families to move into the houses on the estate would be. It would be interesting to know more about DG. Not only as regards the estate, but Rectory Road, who owned the land, anything really. We did a history of the village I am living in now, and loads of interesting facts that nobody knew about came to light. No doubt it would be the same with DG.

Do you remember the field / park in between poplar & rectory rd there was proper goal posts both sides of field, also at side of daintys and terraced houses was Everton st, was there a football team there at one time, don't recall anything ever being built on there and how did Everton st get the name.

That field is what we used to call the Croft. Back when I was at Rectory School, its were we used to play football. We met other schools from the area in matches there as well.

Oh right uncle joe, so that field could possibly have been made for school activities, that makes sense because there wasn't that much room at back of school as it ran onto Dells woodland.

Last autumn, I promised a group of my neighbours to take them for a day out to visit The National Mining Museum, when Spring arrived. Of course, the restrictions in response to the virus have overturned that plan.

Maybe when things get back to being less restrictive. I'm in Yorkshire, but it is still best part of an hour's drive.
