You may have hard about the Blue Bell cottages between Bell & school well here they are, I only remember being three in the school yard my Mam lived in one as a young girl,
School, Cottages, Bell, Clayton's & Jack Pyes pen, across road Bowling Green,


Bam BAM remember asking about the three cottages that stud back with long gardens, well this shows all the houses round the green,

I've just looked on map and was surprised to see 4 football areas on what was Farmer Hunt's corn field behind the old Croft.

Hi bentlegs, my father never lived in garswood his father come from Haydock mother from billinge they lived in Skelton street Bryn before moving to new houses in Birch grove, I was born in billinge hospital and we lived with dads parents until we moved into Ken savages old house on Elm Ave in 1964.

i remember when all the shop owners like annie deackon,tommy evans,daintys & wilf banks the undertaker used to go in the little snug in the bell .

Oh yes I remember snug it was nice little escape from bar and vault area, I also recall the old chaps telling me bell was once a morgue or maybe a temporary morgue did you hear anything about that guys.

The Fazackerly family that I was thinking of that lived in Spindle Hillock had a daughter, Irene. The last time I heard anything about her, she was living in Chicago. Could it be the same one?

Bri I don't know where family came from, I can't recall knowing them until they got shop her father always wore a trilby and mother was always in shop with her sister, perhaps they had relations in spindle hillock.

Went up to the Church yard today, made these three video's for the ex greeners that once lived on the Estate. to see how the old place looks now as I was very surprised myself how clean it was, almost no cars parked on the roads making it more like a private estate, any objections to the estate one off anyone living on the estate, I will DELETE it immediately but I think it shows it in a good light.

Hi malc, can't find anymore photos there was loads iv'e asked mother but she can't find any either must have got lost when we moved,i know there was some of stubshaw cross fishing outings which we went on as kids and some of his coach parked on front in Elm ave.

Malc Arthur smalley who ran the business had two coaches, a coal wagon, and also ran a funeral service.

It was Frank Malc as you say estate was busy then, I remember dad had to go on coal in winter as there was no bookings for coaches, estate was full of coal wagons, Lavins, scholes, and Fred Sharples and many more, in winter is was foggy at tea time everybody had coal fires, do you recall going Leyland green pit and big Roy filled our wheelbarrows I went up and down Birch Grove about 3 to 4 times a day.

Fred was tightest ice cream man ever he would measure it before serving you, Dave Roberts lovely Lad he knew kids who was hard up and yes he gave it away, Tony used put ice cream on cornet with a shovel you always got more than your money's worth off him, then there was Deroma guy who lived in spindle hillock he had automatic dispenser and ice cream was white and light, and you could set clock with them same times everyday, Deroma was 13:30 and Fred 15:00, good old days.

Tommy Aspinal Left Downall green and moved to Fairholme avenue.He had a massive garden at the back of his house.I used to drop Manure of for him of farm.He also helped to form and build Ashton Athletic club and build the ground .for Downall Green.he was a good friend to downall green.

Hi bert, everything I've heard about Tommy has been good, I know he loved the football team and ground that he created, I now know that he also loved the estate and people who dwelled in it, I also know about the outings he organised from the old legion and used his coach which my father drove, he is a legend to downallgreen and probably never knew it.

Joe littler who lived at croft entrance lost his son in his late 20s, his wife Doris worked at NAVC for a long time and joe himself was a keen fisherman.

I didnt know that he had lost his son. Do you know what happened?

After a motorbike accident he had to have an operation but sadly died under anaesthetic, that's what I'm led to believe.

Sorry can't recollect anything, the bus changed the way it passed through Downall Green a few times over the years for different reasons, your Grandma Sally was one of the nicest people in DG she would give us money back on any type of bottle as we would collect them to go too pictures,but we had to look in to make sure Alf wasn't serving as he would say Dit-bym-hear if you said no well tek-um-wer-tha-did, we didn't like he as kids

Speaking of buses where we lived on Elm Ave you could see LUT bus coming up garswood rd to turn at Simms rd, then we ran to rectory rd to catch it in plenty of time, garswood bus was always single decker and billinge bus a double.

How the buses have changed since I lived on the estate. There used to be 3 an hour. One went to Billinge, the second turned round on the estate, and the third I think, but stand being corrected, went to Simms Lane End. All double deckers.

When I lived at DG one bus (I think No56) went from Golborne Ashton to St Helens via Bryn DG Simms Rd Ashton Cross Pewfall Haydock Blackbrook. The other bus (no55) went from Leigh via Golborne Ashton DG Billinge chapel end.

I know the 555 double decker ran from leigh to Billinge, and 556 Golborne to St Helens running via Ashton & Downallgreen.

Meaning the bus route changed a few times, first the bus went all along Downall Green Rd to Simms Road turning back, next turned left to Garswood turning back, next was too Billinge lower end turning back, next Blackbrook v Garswood turning back all going round the Dam, so we had four buses an hour but the bridge became too weak to take all the buses so they had to turn them on estate up Birchgrove down Leyland Green rd to join DGr at moore lane, that was Ok for a few years then all Birchgrove started to break up, so they changed again too turning up Rectory rd then right to join DGr at Moore lane,

When I was driving for LUT in the late 60s, working from Atherton Depot. it was service 55 from Leigh to Billinge with extra peak-time journeys terminating at Simms Road End. Plus the service 56 from Leigh to Garswood. Both routes ran via Lowton, Golborne, Stubshaw Cross, Ashton then Wigan Road to Bryn Cross, then onward via Downall Green.They were all single deckers due to low bridges in Leigh area. Please, Dougie, correct me if I am wrong, as it was over 60 years ago.

I was living in Leigh when I worked for LUT but did drive Trolley Buses as well as Diesel ones. Anyone from Downall Green, Ashton Bryn areas and working for LUT would have been found at the Platt Bridge Depot.

dougie going back to Reeds I remember many years ago going on a night out with them, we got a coach from factory and went to I think Birkenhead to board the Royal Iris, this was with buffs from Garswood Hall John Anders (odd job) and Ian ward organised tickets and it was a good night out to.

Yes they were run by the Sports and Social club at reeds, as you say they were very good nights and as you will know a good few Buffs worked at Reeds at that time, in faked you helped to fill the coaches on above one night out most worked at Reeds you must have been a guest, I,ve said before had many good night out with the old men from the Bell that also helped to fill the coach on a day out

Dougie, Coffin Lane ran from Bolton Road, Ashton in Makerfield, to a smallpox burial ground on Bryn Park estate. It was no longer than 300 yards.
Holy Trinity church was only built in 1838 and the graveyard started in 1841.

Hi Scott--First I was in the same class at Rectory school as your Mum ( Joan ) she was always a very good-looking girl, I must also be on the class photo you have, I also worked under your father-in-law Bill in the pit as for photo's most of them I've already uploaded on WW in the past plus printed them off to give for the last school reunion, so they must be in circulation out there.

If you would like me to print a few off on plan paper if it would help but you may have them already, just ask as I don't know what you have got

hi scott--If you ever get talking to any old timers and you ask about old photo's, and they say no but I've loads of old negatives if they are any good, you could always loan this off me to look through them and print any off, maybe you could be lucky and drop on a pot of gold of photo's never seen before

Downall Green has been in St.Helens, Merseyside, for exactly the same time as Haydock has. And, like Haydock, it's never been in Wigan and neither has it ever been under Wigan council.

It has, however, been under Liverpool diocese since Methuselah was a lad.

Downall Green was part of the Seneley Green Parish, in Ashton in Makerfield., for hundreds of years.
Never, ever, has it been in Wigan, as that would be physically impossible. Never, ever, has it been under Wigan council.

However, you'll be pleased to know that it is included in the WN postcode area, which means it's letters are delivered from the Royal Mail sorting office in WIGAN.
I hope that gives you some welcome relief from your mind-bending ideas regarding where you are / were / from / are likely to be in the future !

As for you never hearing the word (two words, actually) Seneley Green, well, anybody who paid rates (council tax) would have heard it, because they would have had to pay the 'parish precept' for living in it. But, again, that fact is probably too much for you to understand?

Another fact is, when the 'local government act 1972' was finalised, in 1972 (you know, the one that put Downall Green in St.Helens?) no boundaries were changed. Seneley Green Parish was included into St.Helens and the rest of Ashton in Makerfield was included in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan .

Like I said earlier, before this date, Downall Green was under Ashton in Makerfield UDC. Haydock was under Haydock UDC.
Both are now in St.Helens, which is a Metropolitan Borough.

If you don't like it, complain to Conor McGinn, MP for St.Helens North.
