Why does Wigan....

Started by: disco_diva (inactive)

always have to be the butt end of jokes with out of towners?
I love Wigan and feel that it has a lot going for it. There has been alot of progress these past few years. Some places in the U.K really are in a state but Wigan is really on the up. I feel so anyway.
We are not all flat caps and whippets.

some one famous once said.... it doesnt matter if they are bad mouthing me aslong as they are talking about me!.....i feel the same about wigan, we may be the butt of all jokes, but we are mentioned in a few Carry On films not many towns can say that!.....people only talk about what they are interested in!!

Wigan has also been mentioned by George Orwell and George Formby (We made them money didn't we) I am a born Wiganer and though I have travelled around I am always so glad to come home. Wigan is a place to be proud of and will always be in my heart.

Neverstill, yes people do only talk about what is interesting so Wigan must be a good topic of conversation.
Christi, no matter where you travel it is always good to come home.
I think George Formby was fond of Wigan but George Orwell did paint a bleak image of the town but at the time life was a lot tougher than today for people. I wish that he could come and look at the place now. Fair enough its not the poshest place in the world but it has improved and you cant beat a Wiganer for their sense of humour.

well i love wigan maybe not some of the changes that have taken place but it is still home.the thing that drives me mad is that everyone thinks all we eat is pies.well i very rarely eat them.so because of that is it true that everyone in blackpool only eat rock i don,t think so.another thing is how many wiganers have ever been in the parish church just to have a look round it is a beautiful place and i must admit i never went to wigan pier to look round there.

HEHEH pals of ours came over from middlesborough a few months ago. We weren't in as they arrived early, we found them sat in the Bucks Head at Abram, merry as hell and they had chatted to half the pub, we later took them into ashton........last words as they left were...."we want to live here and have Mad Jacks as our local" Tell them foreigners to come try wigan for themselves, I'm proud to be a pie eater, Grimshaws are the best too!

I left school in 1958 and went to work in Manchester where my Wigan accent was a huge joke.I took it on the chin and soon discovered that Mancunians were as big hearted as the rest of us Northeners and I had several happy years as an honorary Mancunian.

So, Empress, your Middlesbrough friends got to see the Bucks Head in Abram and then you took them to Ashton. If you're so proud of Wigan, you should have taken them there instead. Are Grimshaws pies any better than ones you get in Wigan?

Empress, i bet your friends had a good time. You cant beat Wigan hospitality.
When Wigan played Newcastle at home last season, after the match the Geordies had a good old ball in town. I heard one guy who had found some digs for the weekend say he had had a fantastic time in Wigan. There was alot of good natured fun and banter between both set of fans.
Never tried Grimshaws pies. My lot eat Galloways although im partial to Waterfields or Greenhalghs.

People only take the mickey or criticse things that are either worth joking about, or things that they are jealous off. In some cases it's because of ignorance.

Think in Wigan's case it's all 3 and it makes us the place that we are.

Let um keep calling us!

I don't 'take the Mick', I don't dislike Wigan, or Wiganers, and I'm not talking about 'central' Wigan either, just Wigan. All I say is that Wigan is a place, clearly marked, as it has always been. I just don't understand why people from other towns insist on trying to be a Wiganer when they clearly are not. Other places are in the 'Borough' of Wigan, yes, but that is purely for administration purposes. Would you call yourself a Leigher if Leigh had been appointed the borough capital town? If you all turn your backs on the small towns and villages that you do belong to, the names of them had may as well be dropped and everywhere will be Wigan. If that happened, nowhere else would have anything, facility wise, because Wigan would bleed all the funds dry for their own ends. They do a good job of fleecing the rest of the borough towns as it is, every town has to fund Wigan whether they like it or not.

Golborne is under Wigan council. Most Garswooders think they live near Wigan. Golborne is traditionally a Warrington outskirt town, postcode WA, Lowton too. Who would want to forsake their home town to say they are a Wiganer? They must be Maaaaaad!

There is nothing wrong with Ashton.Ashton has alot of history too it. Did you know that the two main high schools always do well in performance league tables. Also its difficult to get your child in there, so many people are actually moving into Ashton for this reason. Also, St Oswalds, what a beautiful church.

Most industry has gone. A lot of Wigan residents have found work out of Wigan.
Wigans 'economy' is only healthy due to the extortionate council taxes collected from far outlying areas like Golborne, Lowton, Atherton and parts of Salford. Places where the residents have never been to Wigan and have no interest in it, but who get nothing back from the greedy council who squander their taxes on Wigan alone.
Tourism ???? You're having a laugh?
Quality of life, anywhere, is artificially subsidised by Credit / Debt.

Right, you lot, let's get it right. Get off your high horses, brush the chips off your shoulders and read this...
I don't dislike Wigan.
I don't dislike Wigan People.
I don't dislike the way Wigan people talk.
I think Wigan people are, generally, very friendly.
I don't make 'nasty jibes', or 'rubbish' peoples posts. I only give my opinion.

Now then, It is 'my opinion' that Wigan is a place called Wigan. It's about five miles from my house, but it starts about three, where the sign says WIGAN. I live in Ashton, not Wigan, and cannot understand why some people say they live in Wigan when they clearly don't. To those who do live in Wigan, I also don't understand what there is to be proud of, because Wigan has got nothing that other towns haven't got. A lot of you only think the way you do because you've never had the need to go anywhere else, it's called 'small town mind'.

So wrong you are Tonker. Maybe if your comments were diluted with a few good manners they would be a bit more palatable.

I find your remarks quite insulting, Tonker. Just because I never lived anywhere other than the town I was born in - ie Wigan - does not mean to say I have 'small town mind' syndrome, or that I am not well informed about the world. Living in more than one place does not necessarily broaden your mind or alter your mind-set either and it certainly doesnt make you better than anyone else.

I would love, however, to have the opportunity to sample living away from my home town, but finances and practicalities make that impossible, but my reasons are not to rid myself of the perils of 'small town syndrome'. It is simply a desire for different surroundings and better climbs.

I am the Wigan version of a cockney if you like, as I was born a few yards from Wigan Pier in the Coffee House, Wallgate, the equivalent of bow bells.

My mother was a mill girl, as was I and my father was a canal boatman before going in the pit. I do not however, wear a shawl and cloggs and suck a clay pipe. I have an Honours degree and manage a busy office.

I agree that if I lived anywhere other than central Wigan, such as Ashton, I would probably say that I live in Ashton, but Ashton is part of the Wigan borough whether you like it or not and that my friend makes you a Wiganer.

As for pride, yes I am proud to be a Wiganer and I am proud of my country. It is time we brought some patriotism back into this country. I am not a royalist, but I am loyal to my country and to my home town. This is what is often lacking in our community it is what binds us together, rather than live as individuals, just happening to be using the same spot of land.

Dark Horse, like I said earlier, get that chip off your shoulder and read, and understand, what I say. I have never put anyone from Wigan down. I do not insinuate cloth cap and clogs wearing, nor shawl and clay pipe. I don't accuse you of chewing tobacco, having no teeth, using dollytub and mangle, tin bath, or anything that seems to be in your subconsious mind. That sort of image died years ago and is only kept alive by people, like yourself, who bring it up to attack anyone who gives their opinion about Wigan. And please, don't tell me where I live. I am aware that Ashton, amongst many other places, is actually in the Borough of Wigan but it is not Wigan, as Astley, at the other end of the borough, is in Salford and as Belfast is not in England even though it comes under English rule.

As for you tonker, insulting once again. Dont accuse me of not reading properly what you have written. You say you don't attack anyone, well suggesting people might have 'small town' syndrome is an attack to me.

It is the inference as much as words. Also don't dare try to tell me what is going on in my own mind. You have no right to tell me I store things about Wigan in there with which to attack people. Unlike you, I strive not to attack anyone. I may argue my case and defend myself, but attack, no. I have not nor have I ever had a chip on my shoulder about anything. You cannot accuse people of 'small town' attitude and not expect them to defend themselves.

Anyway, return some other insult, I would expect no less of your vile attitude. However, it will not get a response from me, however vicious as I refuse to rise any further to your unkind and unwarranted comments that are degenerating into personal attacks.

Thanks Empress. A number of my relatives came from Wallgate and my ole fella's too. Swan Street area. Youre lucky to have souvenir pictures. Sadly I have none of my dad on the boats. He and my grandfather worked together, I think for the Wigan Coal and Iron co. When the boats finished he had to go in the pit. He did 39 yrs and disliked every day of it. He always regarded himself as a boatman. Strangely, despite his whole life on the boats, my grandad couldnt swim!
