ex-downall greener

Started by: bambam (2120)

looking for information regarding the old scene and dwelllers of this village.
I was born 1960, and lived there 24 years. Bluebell, village club (and blackpool days) and the rest.
Would appreciate someone with lots of recent and past knowledge.

Went to school at Our Ladys and remember Walkers shop with the bottle green front. Loved that school, in summer playing on the fields at the back. Rumour was that the hill at the back of the school was the result of a 2nd world war explosion. Headmaster was Mr Starkey when I was there in the 70's.

I remember when the family first moved to Downallgreen, he used to tell jokes about the brand new house they had moved into , like , you just touch a little wart on the wall & a light comes on in a bottle & in the bathroom there is a thing to wash your feet in & pull the chain,Them were the days.

This is my very first post so here goes.
I lived in Hawthorn Ave from 1948 at age 2 till I left home at 21.We were the first tenants in the council house and looking back we were so lucky to have these fantastic homes. They had a lot going for them.
The people I knew in the street included the Atkinsons, the Fairhursts, the Athertons, the Mcphersons, the Ainscoughs, the Wildes, the Prescotts, the Smiths, the Tattoms, and the Lawtons. Lots of others too numerous to mention.
I went to the Rectory school till 1957 and then to Ashton secondary modern till 1961.
Could anybody hazard a guess as to who I am?

If you could send me any pictures of my dad it would mean more to me than winning the lottery, like i said i have only got 1 photo of him.I was really happy when i read that you had a picture.I got married on the 14th May over here and i was really sad cos my dad wasn't here it would of been lovely.Saying that I don't think my dad would of liked it over here as there are not a lot of bars ha. If you want a drink you have to go into the hotels. Life is good here though although its very hot, its well over 100 at the moment. My mum is coming over in 3 weeks i can't wait for that.
Thanks again Pat i am so greatful
