Bambam the land where the garages were is now built on. The only patch of land left is the curved plot as you turn off Leyland Green Rd onto Birch Grove

A few years ago the wood from the Dam corner to the railway line at Spindle Hillock was for sale. Was it sold? and what could you do with it? If the brook was piped and covered over then put a road over this then houses could be put into the woods but other wise you are just buying a wood

Still for sale or it was a couple year back not much land build on theer tho it's a big drop down to millingford brook that then again they built them further down ont same side across from s un s

Replied: 18th Nov 2021 at 12:39

There won't be much land left up there if they carry on, the builders have just erected over 60 houses on old cattle market on frog lane, the only access is down side of old guardians pub and it's no wider than Bolton street, I think someone is taking p??? Or they want a payout off new landowner.

Big drops to a brook can soon be filled in and with pipes the brook can go in a straight line from the dam bridge to the railway bridge. They have built on most of what was Slaters pen which was on different levels and built houses on Booths Brow Road again land which was on a slope. I asked via this thread about the waste plot of land at the bottom of Leyland Green Rd and got a reply back that it was mainly colliery waste from the Quacker Pit, Again this can be dug out and backfilled ready for a pair of houses

We must have dropped lucky as we got a fully refurnished room with double bed plus room for a third bed in an alcove with a cover round, nothing wrong with the Hotel and only 100 yards from Piccadilly Gardens.
A pint in most of the beer gardens was £6+£1.50 for the returnable Glass or Mug if not returned they would be given to charity, you could see young lads walking round picking up empty glasses and taking them back (I did see them giving money but don't know how much)

Drove up Leyland Green Road and there is a for sale sign tilted over at the end of the Red gate road. I googled the area and thought how many houses could be built on the old filter beds and the reservoir. I cannot see UU every reclaiming it and refilling with water. Prime site for houses.

Aye it's sad, greedy breweries and government have killed our pubs, we don't have long serving landlords now like frank fielding (pear tree over 30yrs) and (Russ miller Tudor 38yrs) (Walter hingemakers) only one I know of now is Ian Thorpe of Anvil, yep there biting the dust.

True Malc, the pub I was in the owner put it up for sale at £800.000 after 2years the only interest someone showed was an Indian restaurant owner who wasn't prepared to pay that outrageous amount, so now it's rented at £400 a week.

when arthur williams had the bell it was valued at £ 250,000 . i wonder wot the price is now ? . we knew then that the only way to make it pay was to buy it outright because of the new barrelage scheme the brewery put in & that,s wot,s killing the pubs even now .it,s the sole reason arthur got out when he did .

Yes it is Bri, but not the pub it once was, people came from all over for the meals When Frank & jean ran it, to be honest I only been in a few times since Frank left as you know they had best darts team around especially when you threw for them, the pub was packed day and night back then they loved winning Rose bowl and other competitions, I was very friendly with Frank he was a proper landlord and never seen without a tie, there is only 3 guys left from old pear tree and one of them knows you well ( Peter fishwick) such a demise of a very good pub.

Yes he did Bri, next time I see him I will pass on your regards that will cheer him up, Malc the white powder has taken over everywhere you go that's what has killed social life in Wigan, long gone have the days of turning out for a quiet pint with the old school as these powder sniffing idiots will spoil it, and as you know we have no police anymore when I go out for a pint it's to the Anvil in afternoon I won't go out at night it's full of powder zombies.

All do gooders put a stop to that Malc, kids in them days ran if they saw a bobby even if tha did nowt wrong, today they are chasing police and pelting them with whatever they can throw, government have reduced police force that don't help matters, teachers can't discipline these days so kids rule, that's why we have all these burglaries and drug abuse and it's rising, every time ya switch tell on someone has been stabbed by teenagers this didn't happen back in the days, some parenting today is terrible, I can only assume the cause is kids bringing kids up.
