Wigan's hall of fame - who should be in it.?

they might not be well known outside Wigan but so what.
For starters I'd nominate BIG AMY, the larger than life policewoman, and BARBARA CALDERBANK, the larger than life owner of Pemps.
And my grandad FRANK who worked in the pit from the age of 14 until he was killed by a roof fall aged 48.
Not forgetting BILLY BOSTON of course.

That big lad wot left was a right smasher.

My mum,she will be 102 this year,she has certainly seen more of life than most Wigan folk.

Pam, Arnold never stayed in Wigan. He stayed in Orrell, long before the Wigan Metropolitan Borough was created, so I'm afraid 'the kids' have got one over on you!

And Joe Gormley was from Ashton, not Wigan!

Lord Gormley was a lifelong fan of Wigan RLFC. That's good enough to forgive the fact that he was born in Ashton.

What about Ernie Riley.

Regardless of which rugby team he supported, Joe Gormley was the NUM representative for the St.Helens area and worked in various St.Helens area coal mines.

Joe lived in Princess Park, Gathurst at the time of his death..

I had never heard of this lady until I read the following report about her in the WW news section. It sounds like she's deserving of a place in the hall of fame.

A plaque honouring Wigan’s first female councillor will be unveiled on Friday (April 5th) – the first official recognition for one of the most important women in the town’s history.

Martha Hogg was elected in 1920 – becoming one of only a handful of women councillors in Britain and the first in Wigan. She became active in politics after seeing first-hand the terrible conditions the poor were forced to live in.

Martha was a midwife and worked in the poverty-stricken communities of industrial Wigan, which were later immortalised in George Orwell’s book The Road To Wigan Pier. She was shocked by what she saw and joined the Labour party – standing first in 1919 and then again, successfully, in 1920.

At that time it was still highly unusual for a woman to become involved in politics, particularly a working-class woman like Martha. She was born into poverty in 1872, leaving school at thirteen and working in a factory until her marriage. After that, she trained as a midwife, working in some of the poorest communities in the country.

Tommy Monks, Mayor of Wigan, many moons ago. He lived at the top of our street and as kids we thought he was famous especially when he wore his chains

Hi Mac, Herbert Street is off Miry Lane, we lived in Fletcher Street (now gone) which was off Herbert Street. Your Great Grandad's house was the last one on the left hand side (coming from Miry Lane), then there was a cross roads and to the left was Haig Street, to the right was Pennyhurst Street and straight on it became Tickle Street (I think, could be wrong).
