Returning home today from't van up theyer.... charnock richard services are charging £2.05 unleaded £2.12 diesel... ignorant or what ?

Did anyone force you to buy any?

If not......whats the problem?

Probably would have been better to wait till you got off the M6. These service stations have you over a barrel, they always have charged more.

Not much of a margin there, BB, between M/Way Services and high street. Plenty garages are asking £199.9 for diesel. The services have always been much higher.

I was travelling to Atherton yesterday and we passed a couple of petrol stations near Atherton and both were cheaper than Tesco for diesel!??

The fact that Charnock Richard services are (only) charging £2.12 shows you how much over the odds (price to cost) the regular petrol stations are ripping people off by at the moment.
In normal times CR services is usually 45-50p per litre more than a regular one, the fact they are just over 10p actually highlights what is going on.
The wholesale cost of petrol has dropped in recent weeks but instead of retailers passing on the savings to the motorist they have hiked the price.

That Shell station on Atherton Road, in Hindley, diesel was £194.9 last week. The day after it was £197.9.
Asda, in Haydock, is at £195.7.

We can all do the usual thing and blame the government but until such time as the pound gains some strength against the dollar, the world markets settle down following the Russian invasion and the oil companies can upscale production, fuel is not going to significantly come down in price.

I saw a report yesterday that said oil may hit $238 a barrel. Fuel will be almost unaffordable then.

Boy am I glad I own a bike,, I had my MOT test this week and since my last mot I've done just 3000 miles of which, My Son did 1500 miles during his stay So , Its not biting too hard on me, I've also set a solar charging point in my shed to charge my E bike from the sun, I feel sorry for these tradesmen who drive Merc sprinter vans and similar, Guzzling diesel at £2 a litre will hit the work they have to charge for,,,

would it not have been better to get off at Goose Green and go to Sainsbury's?

Baz, he was heading south on the M6. You can't get off at Goose Green. In any case, he would've gone way past his destination if he did!
Maybe he could've turned off at Standish, if his car would make it the extra couple of miles?

No intentions of using the services... me and her indoors have a guess at the cost which goes up all the time.. the majority of the time I use cruise control just over 60mph which returns 56-58 mpg.

The price rises are being made worse than they should be by those involved because like Golden Bear says, they are "Greedy Bastards".

The sad thing thing is because of people now having more money today, nobody now reacts and protests like they would have done in the past!

God help us if we are ever involved in another war!

Price was £1.35 pre covid/Brexit/Russians, then we carried on buying it up to £1.99 , So now they've dropped it to £1.83 and we are rejoicing ,
They are laughing at us, Stop buying it or buy less, Tickle the accelerator pedal, slow down, walk more, cycle more , thats the only way to win and cut their profits,

Correct Peter, in normal times there is usually a penny a litre between Tesco and Asda at most.
But 10p, things aint normal.

Back in the day petrol stations would give you tokens to collect a mug or such like as a come on.
Now if they started giving 20p a litre off for every pesky cyclist you
launched into a verge they would do a roaring trade.

The public are having to pay massive charges for their energy, but the company Eon is donating thousands of pounds in sponsorship at the Commonwealth Games.

Surely any sponsorship of all events by energy companies and also fuel suppliers should have been suspended by the Government?

And, to rub salt in it, they are major sponsors of .......

Chatty have you seen the NEW highway code, It states you must give way to cyclists and give them 1.5 metres clearance when overtaking them, The new pastime for cyclists is to video passing motorists and if they are not complying to the 1.5 metre rule, sent a copy of their reg on a video file showing them too close and, That motorist will get fined and points on their licence, So after lauching 3 cyclists into the verge, Yuo would no longer be a fuel buyer

Just checked out nearest arterial route to my home.

If you measure 1.5 M from the cycle track on either side of the road, there is insufficient space left between for two streams of motor traffic. In rush or other congestion, when oncoming traffic prevents driver from using their side of the road to overtake a cyclist, you cannot legally overtake a cyclist, period.

It would effectively render the highway closed to motor traffic other than at quiet times.

Tommy Tee, Myself and our group of cyclists keep in single file, If consideration is practiced on both parties, There is no problems,
I believe Wigan Wheelers go out on Sunday runs in Three abreast because , this makes it easier for cars to pass as the group is shorter in length ..

I've been working in Prestwich this morning and, on my way there, there was a woman on a bike, holding the traffic up, as they do. The driver in front of me spied his chance and went to overtake, just as the cyclist swerved into the road to avoid a pothole !
He missed knocking her for six by a bug's dick. But, it would've been the car driver's fault. It always is!

I reckon there will be more accidents in future, due to these new rules.

The pot holes and grids are an issue for cyclists, no one wants to hug the kerb because the the kerbside is full of debri , plastic bottles , chip papers and broken up tarmac, This damage is not done by cyclist but, we are expected to , stay at the kerb side, If you do not keep the 1.5 metres away, its the car drivers who will get blame and rightly so, sat there in your shiney fortress of tin and shatter proof glass, All we have is an ultrathin covering of brightly coloured lycra

A euro garage near me has been taken over by asda... overnight unleaded down from £1.84 a ltr to £1.74...theres some skullduggery going on between government and the petrol retailers.

At costco you can save 1p a litre, but you have to pay £26 for the privilege!

Rip -Off Britain

BB, ok, so it's 3p a litre less than the next cheapest in the area.
But it costs £26.40 for Costco membership. It follows that you need to buy 880 litres of diesel, per year, from Costco, to break even.

Do you live in Wigan? If you do, you have to travel to Haydock to fill up. That, in itself, doesn't make sense.
(average tank size is 70 litres? 70 x 3p = £2.10 saving on a tankfull. 6 to 8 miles per litre, average, means you'll use what you've saved travelling to Costco and back!) ...... (go to Asda instead, it's £1.83!)

Some of the local small petrol stations are selling petrol/diesel cheaper than the Supermarkets other than Asda,

If the Supermarkets are buying more in bulk, surely they should be like Weatherspoon's who buy alcohol in bulk and charged less than other drinking establishments.

The truth is that Supermarkets unlike Weatherspoon's are experts in the world of ripping off the customers as they have proved with the continual increases in the price of not only petrol/diesel, but another essential item like milk.

The dearest Petrol Station in Wigan (Pemberton), as turned into an Asda, the one opposite Stephens Way on Warrington Road, it is all green now, with Asda logo's all over it, and the price of unleaded is £1.74 ltr

I have not put fuel in from that place for years now, I have only used the car wash, and that is crap, it has gone from the dearest to the cheapest, fuel station in one stroke, and it is an Asda too

Corner Lane in Leigh, but it has no corners, so that must be a Leigh thing

TONKER ,THE guy on the M6 travelling south you are right there is no turn off for Goose Green ,BUT all he had to do was come off at the ASHTON junction turn right over the motorway join the M6 going north then exit at JUNCTION 25 FOR WIGAN then onto Sainsbury's easy peasy ! GB

It is the same for going North, it is easier to get on the M6 at Goose Green, and then get off at Ashton, and be over the bridge, that is easier than going through the top of Pemberton, and round the roundabouts at the M58 junction

Our petrol has come down 28c in the last couple of weeks. Was 191.9 now 163.9.

GOLDEN BEAR, what would be the point in him travelling down to J24, then doubling back to J25 to get fuel, when his turnoff for home is J26 (Wigan turnoff!)

I have just realised, that euro garages is owned by those chappies who now own Asda, they have a few garages around the Wigan area, so they have just rebranded them with the Asda name, but they have also dropped their fuel prices to the Asda price, which is good

Tonks: I had this discussion some time ago when I had recently bought in Wigan. Junction 25 (I think) does not exist going south, as I found out to my journey round Ashton.
I think TTS is right.
Someone, I think it was you, put on a map of the "missing link" of the motorways round Wigan, which, I think, would be good defence against the charge.
