I can't see it working though.

Just checked out nearest arterial route to my home.

If you measure 1.5 M from the cycle track on either side of the road, there is insufficient space left between for two streams of motor traffic. In rush or other congestion, when oncoming traffic prevents driver from using their side of the road to overtake a cyclist, you cannot legally overtake a cyclist, period.

It would effectively render the highway closed to motor traffic other than at quiet times.
