Is it a law of the land or is it a guideline If it is a guideline then it is up to each person if they abide by this.

That's not surprising, people are understandably apprehensive at approaching the selfish and/or possibly unpredictable elements of society (unless of course you had an exemption, in which case you have my sympathies for being unfairly judged).

The problem is, it is impossible to tell whether someone is simply inconsiderate, irresponsible or have a genuine excuse/reason. In which case, those of us who are holier than thou/responsible citizens must offer the benefit of the doubt.

Maybe a badge would avoid uncertainty.

Me and Mrs went to Tesco, most people had masks, some staff not wearing them. Mustn't be compulsory.

Yes, they are a bit uncomfortable and glasses tend to steam up.

However, it isn't much of an inconvenience to endure for the greater good.

Shop staff don't have to wear masks, it's the shoppers who have to. Mandatory means you have to, if you won't then stay at home and shop online.

There's a difference between when and if.

I've been in Bradford today and these facemasks seemed very popular amongst the women.

Just returned from Sainsbury's, B&M Bargains, The Food Warehouse, M&S and TKMaxx.

Only spotted five people in total without a mask, although at that time all stores were pretty quiet. Two young people (but they are probably as irresponsible and selfish as I was at their age), two people who were probably exempt as one looked like the carer of the other and a middle aged bloke (but he was wearing shorts and flip flops so was obviously challenged above the neck anyway). .

Well done the people of Wigan, I knew we were more intelligent/caring than most. I was quite surprised and secretly proud!

Most of the staff were not wearing anything (ooooeerr missus ) apart from TK Maxx who all wore either masks or visors. I felt very comfortable in there.

We are due temps of 28-30 next week and I shall wear the almost obligatory crocs and shorts. Just to show people “ I am not challenged from the neck up” I shall wear a mask where ever the by laws tell me I have to. Still not convinced in the value of masks but neither do I feel I can pick and choose what laws I obey. That is the first step to anarchy.

No offence meant Broady, it isn't so much the shorts as the flip flops, beach wear not middle of Wigan attire.

Crocs, I believe (though not 100% sure) are more civilised and clog like.

I was in Tesco Horwich around 4-00 pm this arvo, most people were wearing masks but a small percentage maybe 5% were without masks, they should not have shopping.
All Tesco have to do is put one member of staff at the entrance, preferable a big hairy ar*ed bloke, and stop people without masks fron entering the store.
Non of Tesco staff were wearing masks, but I believe they are not making it compulsory for them to be worn.

So, what some of you are saying is, people who don't wear masks can't shop for food and other necessities, even if they're asthmatic, have COPD, people who already have speaking difficulties such as stammering, people who have difficulty breathing or, like myself, claustrophobic?

It's a bit late in the day to start asking people to wear masks in shops after several months of not having to, dontcha think? So, where did this "new" law come from all of a sudden? Having someone "on guard" at shops would be an outrageous violation of our freedom and would, ostensibly, put themselves in danger of being attacked by desperate people who only want to eat, which is a basic human right!

I continue to shop at my local Tesco Express in the evening when it's quiet and have had no problem. I mentioned to one of the ladies who serves there that wearing a mask wasn't compulsory for them, but she told me that, if they were on the shop floor, they had to wear one as company policy, but could be taken off once serving behind the screen provided. She also told me that they weren't allowed to turn customers away so, to whom do we now turn? Hmm, let me think. Armed Police? The Army? Are we to have Marshal Law declared on people who only want to buy some food? Are we suggesting a spot of Fascisism here? "Oh, just shoot 'em. The cheek! They want food? How dare they!"

Reeediculous! I will not be dictated to by bloody idiots in the Government who don't know their backsides from their elbows and I will NOT cover my face with a skimpy piece of cloth that's as useful as a chocolate fireguard and end up having a panic attack, nor will I be brain-washed, and as long as people continue to believe all the propaganda about this situation then their lives will remain in fear.

If you didn't become ill within the first few weeks, then you won't, because viruses are airborne, meaning they are in the atmosphere from which we cannot escape because we have to breathe to survive.

It's okay, I know many of you will have a go at me for this, and I don't care, but I was so incensed by some of you saying people should be turned away if they aren't wearing masks that you become judge and jury over others who don't know the medical conditions of those that still need to shop, despite their disabilities.

They managed in lockdown and survived, they can manage now. There are people to assist and shopping can be delivered. Also, those who are exempt don't need to wear a mask... simple. On another thread I referred to idiots in Wigan town centre. These weren't people without masks, these were ones with masks on which didn't cover their noses, they probably felt they were making a point and were big and clever. However the only point they were making was that they were not as intelligent as the rest of us.

"It's a bit late in the day to start asking people to wear masks in shops after several months of not having to, dontcha think? So, where did this "new" law come from all of a sudden? Nope, it is simple common sense and the government have made this decision based on information provided to them by individuals far more informed than you or I. Better late than never. You have basic human rights but you do not have the right to put my life at risk with your reckless behaviour.

"Reeediculous! I will not be dictated to by bloody idiots in the Government who don't know their backsides from their elbows and I will NOT cover my face with a skimpy piece of cloth that's as useful as a chocolate fireguard and end up having a panic attack, nor will I be brain-washed, and as long as people continue to believe all the propaganda about this situation then their lives will remain in fear."

The only thing "Reeediculous!" is your selfish, ignorant (in the uninformed sense) "me, me, me" attitude. "Propaganda" "Brainwashed" Listen to your hysteria! It's a piece of cloth on your face for a short while whilst you are in a shop for goodness sake, get a grip. There are people dying and all you are worried about is putting a bit of cloth on your face.

We are all entitled to our opinion Mollie, and on this I will respectfully disagree.

Mollie m you are correct when you say we never wore masks for several months at the start of the outbreak, and I’m not defending the Government, but they have never had to deal with a pandemic before, they didn’t know how how it was going to spread and what the infection rate would. be.
I think taking any measure is better than doing nothing.
I stand by my statement that people without masks should not be allowed to shop.
Before they relaxed the rules from 24th Aug, Tesco had staff at the entrance and exit doors of the store, if 2 people came out, they let 2 people in, was that an infringement of human rights? I think not, just common sense control of shopper numbers.
Just to be clear, people with exemptions due to health or medical conditions I wouldn’t have a problem with them not wearing a mask.
The masks I wear are quite substantial and not flimsy pieces of cloth which you describe.
Their main function is to stop the wearer from passing germs on to others, but they do offer some protection from others.
If I could walk round Tesco and see everybody wearing a mask, apart from exemptions, I would feel very confident shopping there.

0years, I endorse your comments, well done.

It was on BBC news last week where someone was talking about masks. He said the ones hand made out of cloth were no use. But there was a mask making article on the BBC news app not long since showing you how to make one using a t-shirt. So you don't know what to believe.

What would the young RAF pilots from WW2 think of this discussion. They wore crude, by today’s standards, masks for up to five hours at a time in cramped cockpits , flying through flak and avoiding enemy fighters.
COVID 19 is spread through droplets from the nose and mouth. An appropriately specified face mask will give a very high level of protection to both wearer and others in the vicinity.
In my book safety is paramount, I have no doubt whatsoever that it’s the right thing to do. The confusion in government advice no doubt comes from the mass of advice that emerges from the scientific advisers. Sage alone has 86 members. It’s inevitable that there will be a divergence of views amongst such a large number of specialists.
The PM has an unenviable task trying to condense the advice, which often changes over short periods of time, into a coherent message for the public.

It looks like Wigan and some areas in Greater Manchester, and West Yorkshire, could have been spared from the lockdown on a factual basis.
However, had the lockdown taken effect with the only areas lkely to see a spike in cases then criticism would have followed.
I guess the medics advice was seen as political and they' spent a few days debating it before the politicians and mandarins opted for a larger area to obviate any accusations of bias.
