Does anyone know what the rules are concerning a car bought from a dealership that had previously been in an accident. Does the dealership have to tell the people purchasing said car of such a history. Car concerned is only 18 month old

There's nothing wrong with a car that's had an accident, as long as it's been repaired.

there are categories of damage, there are 'bumps' and there are smashed up cars and some in between, a cat 'D' can be repaired but' it must appear on the log book and the insurance premium will be higher, not because its unsafe, its because the insurance has already paid out once on that car,

'Cat' whatever means nothing, only to insurance assessors. A 'cat' classification does not describe an extent of damage. I*t's a moneymaking fraud.

Regardless, BerylH doesn't give enough information to answer, really. But, the only comeback, in any case, is if a dealer (or anybody, for that matter) has sold a car which has been catagorised as 'A' or 'B' ,by an insurance company, and they have put it back on the road, fraudulantly. Or, perhaps, if the car has been 'in an accident' and then cloned onto another car's paperwork/ identity.

Thank you for that guys. It's just that this happened to a friend very recently and when he got it home he noticed a problem, took it back to be sorted and that's when he was told that it would be a bit difficult due to the accident that the car had had with the previous owner. That's what got me thinking about the ethical issues.

In that case, Beryl, the car has not been repaired properly. That means the dealer has sold the car in a faulty condition, and your friend has a case.
Tell him to take it to law!

For the sake of a tenner or so there are firms that do checks on second hand cars and will tell you if there is any finance outstanding etc with just a simple phone call. I always do an HPI check or similar before buying a vehicle,even off a friend.

For that reason, a dealer will always run a hpi check on any cars he takes in.

A hpi check won't always tell you if a car has been accident damaged.

Thank you all. Unfortunately this is all the information I have but will pass this info on to them so see where they go from here. They have returned the car and got their money back now so I expect they may now just want to let it be. Thanks once again
