The plan includes a review of up to 10 of its 165 UK stores for possible closure over the next five years

I was talking to a woman on Tuesday, who doesn't bother going to Pendlebury's any more, because it is too far to walk and we were saying that it is like they moved the store from Standishgate, down to the bottom of the old Station Road

Is there any future for the large department stores in general?
Those forming parts of chains might benefit from bulk purchasing discounts on stock they buy in, but I guess no more so than other traders who shift commensurate volumes.
What competitive advantage can department stores draw upon?
Are they squeezed between on line retail, and the cluster of specialists in the malls?

Burned down did not mean closed down though!

Pendleburys became Debenhams believe it or not in 1957 I can remember the Pendleburys signage when I was younger and I am 63 this year.

Well I remember the Pendlebury's signage in the mid 1960's and always assumed that it was still called Pendlebury's at that time and my mother always called it Pendlebury's

Peter,Pendleburys was bought by Debenhams in 1948.

Is Wigan on the list?
I certainly hope not. There'll be no shops left in Wigan at this rate. Monsoon is the latest one to close and I loved that shop.
BHS was another of my faves and that's gone too. People just won't bother going to Wigan if shops keep closing.

"Debenhams stores are set to close after the failure of last-ditch efforts to rescue the ailing store chain.
It means all 12,000 employees are likely to lose their jobs when the chain's 124 shops cease trading"

Debenhams is the main anchor store in the Grand Arcade, so what is going to replace it ?
This may sound a bit premature, but with what is and what has been happening in the High Streets, with the Covid thing accelerating the move on to online shopping, is this the death knell for the Grand Arcade, how many stores would have to close in the Grand Arcade, to make it unviable, leaving the owners with no choice but to close it.
I am sorry to sound depressing about this, but I think the writing is on the wall

I still think that the Market Hall will close, before another one is built/ready as part of the demolition of the bottom part of The Galleries, that being the Market Hall and old Morrisons building

Stockton on Tees council are biting the bullet and adapting the town centre to meet future needs. The plan incudes 2000 houses within a mile of the town centre. A Wigan version could use the parish church as it's focal point.

Demolish the GRAND ARCADE and build a 200 seat cinema, a Dance Hall Night Club( for adults over 40,) and maybe another rail/tram link to Manchester..

Ron. Maybe the guided busway should be extended from Leigh into Wigan.
