Is there any future for the large department stores in general?

Those forming parts of chains might benefit from bulk purchasing discounts on stock they buy in, but I guess no more so than other traders who shift commensurate volumes.

What competitive advantage can department stores draw upon?

Are they squeezed between on line retail, and the cluster of specialists in the malls?
