Reading a novel today and every person in it seemed to be Sir something or another based down south.
which led me to ask

Bradley Wiggins' only connection to Wigan is his name rhymes with it

I 'attended' Wigan college. I've owned several properties in Wigan. I spent years working in Wigan (still do, occasionally). I know many people in Wigan and I even married a girl from Wigan.

But I don't expect to be classed as a 'Wigan person' due to the fact that I wasn't born, or brought up, in Wigan and have never lived in Wigan.

And getting knighted wouldn't alter those facts!

Don't know whether its true but I've been told that members of the public can recommend people for honours including knighthoods.
I've decided to test it out by putting my own name forward for recognition in the New Year honours.

"Joe Gormley - Born in Ashton in Makerfield, never lived in Wigan."

He spent the later years of his life & died in Shevington.
Which believe it or not, was "Wigan Rural" before the boundary change

With the emphasis on 'near' (ie: not 'in'). In any case, a baroness is hardly a knighthood!
