2 Davies Yard, Kitt Green, Pemberton, Wigan

I am researching my family tree and since found out James Ashurst once lived at the following address in 1899 : either 2 Davies Yard, Kitt Green, Pemberton, Wigan or it could read Dowies Yard, Kitt Green, Pemberton, Wigan.

Are you familiar with Kitt Green at all? Which address is the correct address? Any ideas how I can get hold of a map?

Go into Stuff and scroll down for Wigan Yards. there is no davies or Dowies but there is a Dean's Yard off City Road

There's nothing on This Map but it does show 'Barracks'. The map is 1892.

Hi Tonker, I appreciate your efforts in helping me. I have just been online and zoomed in on your chosen map. Looked at every inch of the map and sadly I can not see where "Barracks" is mentioned. Can you highlight whereabouts please?

Zoom in on the pink bit. You might see a white square, marked Bowling Green? Barracks is to the right of that.

Thank you, yet I can't see it. I have found the Bowling Green you kindly mention. Street name Charles Street seen directly below the Bowling Green. The numbers 183 and 4.103 seen directly to the left of the Bowling Green. Above reads Engine Yard. Sorry! Help.

You're on the wrong map, click on where it says "This Map"!

After you've done that, zoom in on the PINK bit.

See "Lamberhead Green" marked out? look there and pretend you're in St.John's Church.
Walk out of the front door, along the path and onto Church Street. Walk along Church Street, past the houses, then come to Fleet Street.
Turn left.
Continue along Fleet Street in a southerly direction, until you come to a crossroads.
Turn right (left as you look at the map) and Barracks is first left, past a pub and two shops!

I cant thank you enough, you have been most helpful. One last question as you seem to know the area well. To the right of "Barracks" you can see a Public House initials in pink and to the right again in cream. Also a Public House initials directly in front of the bowling green to the left of the "Barracks". Any thoughts to the names of the pubs? Also at the top of the road called "Barracks beside Pigot Street another P.H initials can be seen. I would be interested to know the names of the pubs and if they are still standing and havent been demolished.

The one with the bowling green behind it was, I think, 'Miner's Lamp', now gone. I don't know the one just to the right of Barracks, but the next one will be White Swan, which is still there. Travellers Rest was opposite Barracks, now an Italian type food place?

Tonker, your correct The PH at the top of the road called Barracks beside Pigot St was the Travellers Rest now an Italian.

The Old Machine pub was on the corner of Ormskirk Rd and White St opposite the White Swan.

The George Inn was on the corner of Ormskirk Rd and Fleet St.

Search for George Inn to get a picture.

There was a crackin' chippy in Loch Street in the eighties. It was called 'Gills'. I can just imagine, barbarabanter's ancestor calling at Gills for a fish, chips and sloppy peys on his way home, in Barracks, and making butties wi'it, aight un three slaaaaices o'whaaaaite breeeeud wi'plenty o'but-teeeer!

Then again, Gills met norr've been theer in them days?

I sometimes used to get my chip from Loch st chippie in the sixties when I was at Pem caravans.
