Union Bridge

I hear a lot about Union Bridge,I've seen the photo on here but cant put my figure on where it could have been. A lot of people get on the bus and say 'Union Bridge please' I know it was in Newtown. Whereabouts was it? what is in its place? and why has it gone? I'm confused!!

It wasn't a bridge as such. Union Bridge is the area between Pemberton and Newtown and nobody's moved it.

Yes it was a bridge It went across the road near to where the shops are. I think it was just a mineral line?

It was called Union Bridge because the company that built the line was known as the Lancashire Union Railway and this branch ran from a junction at Bryn to Norley Hall Colliery. The mineral line was closed in 1947 and after the dismantling of the bridge, one side of the road was occupied by Plumptons Union Garage and the other side by Plessys who, I think, were a telecommunications company.

talking of bridges can anyone tell me just where exactly was skew bridge i seem to recall that it may have been in the marus bridge area

The L.U. line crossed over what is now the dual carriage way close to the Ben Jonson pub at Goose Green.

Isn't Skew Bridge the one near Alexandra Park on Warrington Rd.

Hi winder, You are correct Plessey was a telecoms company They had three sites in Wigan. Union Bridge, Lamberhead and Wallgate. I worked at the Wallgate factory untill it closed in 1973. Best place I have ever worked. I am sure anybody else who worked there, will say the same.

I've found this topic most interesting. If the mineral line was closed in 1947 and the bridge dismantled thereafter, then it all happened before I was born.
