It was called Union Bridge because the company that built the line was known as the Lancashire Union Railway and this branch ran from a junction at Bryn to Norley Hall Colliery. The mineral line was closed in 1947 and after the dismantling of the bridge, one side of the road was occupied by Plumptons Union Garage and the other side by Plessys who, I think, were a telecommunications company.
