'A place of vibrancy and culture': Wigan to seek status of town centre excellence

Well I am sure that is what visiting folk will think in a few months time, when The Galleries are being demolished.

Building a second arcade in a small town centre like Wigan was a mistake and with decline in town centre shopping made worse by the lockdown which has led to more people, especially the elderly, shopping online and having goods delivered to their homes.
More now even having weekly Supermarket shopping to their homes.
What makes me laugh with the latter is the fact when the Supermarkets came on the scene, people stopped having deliveries from local grocers because they preferred to go to a supermarket.
How we have turn full circle!

In my opinion we do not need any or deserve any status such as purple flag's whatever colour you can think of ,why because this CLOWNCOUNCIL have already destroyed the HEART OF WIGAN . We do not need a bowling alley , we also don't need another cinema. We already have a cinema. What we do need is the council to reduce the rate's to entice businesse's to come to Wigan in the first place . Instead of the 350 flat's why don't they build council house's for the needy who are or have been waiting years for a home somewhere else in the borough . PS , This thread was done by my wife her first .. GB .

Golden Bear's Wife suggested, "What we do need is the council to reduce the rate's to entice businesse's to come to Wigan in the first place."
But the council have no control over business rates.
Then, "Instead of the 350 flat's why don't they build council house's for the needy who are or have been waiting years for a home ".
But a lot of the proposed flats will already be allocated to the housing association set up for Hong Kong immigrants.

How exactly would a reduction in business rates encourage people to return to town centre shopping?
Anyone?
Anyone?
Anyone?

It appears that they are depending on the night time economy and making the town centre safer with less antisocial behaviour. Good luck with that then. They need to clean up the day time antisocial behaviour, which is off putting to say the least.

Some shops in Wigan are business rates exempt.
