Started by: mortarmillbill (928)

The Warrington Road / Smithy Brook Road junction will be completely closed for a few days from Monday 7th July.

Probably doing the final works and resurfacing the junction.

Poolstock Lane will be busy - expect chaos.

I saw those signs for the first time yesterday (Saturday) and I agree they must be planning to be resurfacing the entire site, because the road surfaces are a mess, BUT also it should be remembered that after resurfacing, they will be getting the painters and decorators in to paint the junction, green, red, yellow, and sky blue pink, because it is a cycle junction, and yoo know how colourfully decorated those are

False alarm - senior moment. These are overnight closures.

I am surprised that TTS did not spot it

Signs cause anxiety and stress, the reality is different, Remember those signs on the duel carraige way, " work to start on 20th Feb expect delays"
Every one shaking with fear and asking, " what shall we do now " I think it was one weekend when they put a bump in the road and a couple of
20 MPH signs up, The rest of Poolstock Lane is back to the santa pod drag Queen racing strip its always been,
Don't panic Mr Mannering,

Bollocks !!!!

Yesterday it said on three different signs, that the road would be just 'closed' between the dates given, no mention whatsoever about overnight closures, I have not been passed today, so I take it the signs have been altered to say 'overnight closures' ?

According to the signs the A49 will be closed at 6.00pm every night so make sure that you finish work early.

I have been passed one of the signs today, I couldn't look at them all because they have got temporary traffic lights in operation there today, and the top part of the sign was there last week, with the closure and dates on it, but that bottom bit mentioning the overnight thing as been added since, so it was a cock up, or they ran out of letters, but mortarmillbill, yoo weren't seeing things, or should I say not seeing things, because those signs were altered after they had been put there.

And tell him he can't use an electric cycle.

I have just been looking at the roundabout there, and they are widening Warrington Road, as it leaves the roundabout heading towards Newtown, and it looks like they will have to do something with that traffic light pedestrian crossing there, it looks like it is in the way.

So maybe they will be relocating the crossing under the cover of darkness, the same way that they moved the bodies out of the old St Paul's graveyard at Goose Green, at night under the cover of darkness during the early 1960s

That was for that very same stretch of road too

I walked across the crossing this morning and it looks like the crossing is staying but the road is being narrowed at this point.

Yes the crossing is stopping, and it is due to be 'upgraded' as part of the scheme, and the pavement on either side of the road will be a shared space, between cyclists and pedestrians, so that Tom can cycle over people's toes, without fear of prosecution.
So they are going to narrow the road, so that half a dozen cyclists a week can cross the road there, that is progress for yoo isn't it

According to the Council press release 90000 cyclists have passed through the Saddle roundabout since March 2020 so quite a few of them must be coming and going via the A49.

Not many people will have noticed that it is now a B road.
The A49 now runs down the new bypass from Little Lane roundabout to Wigan.

the closure is very noticable from where I am, Who planned the shut down? because, Poolstock Lane is now SUPPOSED to be a 20 mph Zone, As it happens the only people doing 20 or less are cyclists, Its like a race track but, my point is, IF the Poolstock lane narrowing had been a success, the tailbacks would be horrendous ,Its because the Poolstock Lane updades flopped that the closures will still allow traffic flows as normal,
In the words of the failed highways engineer, Sledgieboy,
" you could't make it up"

Tom

According to Faceache, traffic cannot turn right out of Smiffy Brook Road, on to Warrington Road, it has to turn left and go around the roundabout, and go that way, and that has caused traffic jams on the new road today, which have been horrendous

And Warrington Road is closed from 6.00pm which is a bit early.

So Poolstock Lane jammed up too, but a nice bit of nostalgia there

yes Tommy tea Bag, I know they can't turn right from smiffy brooke lane, its been like that for weeks, I think us cyclists should get a medal from the council because, our cars are at home, we are not adding to the congestion, we are not polluting the air, We put our lives on the line by dodging in and out of the cars parked on the pavement, yet we get castigated for going on the pavement, We take up less than .4 of a metre on the pavement, a car parked 2 wheels on the pavement takes 1 full metre of room, a woman pushing a pram takes a full metre, a leccy scooter takes a metre, a person walking a dog take a metre and if the have one of those extendable 'trip wire' leads, they take a mile of the pavement, We are the knights of the community , the greenest and the less carbon footprint being of the World, treat us with respect because, the more cyclists there are, the more road is available for Yoo,

Replied: 8th Jun 2021 at 21:17

They have narrowed the road there where the crossing is, and the crossing is turned off, so this presumably means they will be putting a new crossing there, which will have all the cycle bangs and whistles on it.

They are making the roundabout better for vehicular traffic, as well has for Tom and his mates, because where it has been just two lanes leading on to the roundabout, there will be three lanes, with the inside one for going down Warrington Road towards Newtown, and the other two will be for accessing the new road

I'm happy with that new cycling lane set up,

These cycle lanes are a great idea, if only they were used. I was standing at a bus stop at the Saddle today when 2 cyclists zipped past a few inches from me. About 9 feet away, the other side of a grass verge was a bright green cycle lane. They didn't appear to be aware of it.

dave018: Hi Dave i also have been studying google maps and you are spot on, for some inexplicable reason they have cancelled calling Warrington Road FROM the Little Lane Round-about to the saddle junction its new name is B 5386 ,BUT HOW ABOUT this for crazy ! when you follow thro the lights at the saddle junction it suddenly becomes the A49 AGAIN . Just why they have done that beggars belief .,,, also when you go on the new so called by-pass to wigan when you go thro lights where Poolstock lane joins in the section is called Chapel Lane but for that short stretch it's not the A49 UNTIL AFTER Caroline St then back to A49 to say they have made a bollocks is putting it lightly ,for me they should have left WARRINGTON ROAD ALONE AND GIVE THE BY-PASS A NEW NUMBER That would have been a whole lot simpler typical of planner's !!!!!!!! Well I went for a play about on the green lane psychopaths and, They are similar to all the others, Its a 2 way cycle path with a dividing line with indicating arrows to show cyclist which lane to travel in, It was completely ignored by a couple walking holding hands, they were so much in love they didn't hear me coming up behind them and the cood lovingly together in the evening warm sun, The green lanes were so attracted to them they didn't see the lovely brand new pedestrian footpath which runs adjacent , Anyroad, The cyclepaths are pointless until they get joined up, No matter which way you go, you come to a full stop and you have to either, ride the pavement ( not legal) or risk the road ( dangerous),
Its a hotch botch, hopefully all these cycle lanes will get joined up and make a safe path for the cyclist, only then will it encourage more people to leave the car at home and gain fitness, less polluted air , road accidents and reduce congestion,

This is all part of 'them men's' scheme, carried out by the government, in order to stop 'us men' having our own powered transport.
Cycling is ok for a leisure activity, but not going to work, visiting others, going shopping, socialising etc..

Can you imagine, going to visit relatives, who live ten miles away, at Christmas? Mum, Dad and three kids, all on bikes?
A plumber going to a job ten miles away, carrying his tools and parts in a big rucksack, on a bike?
A mum going shopping, to Tesco, with two kids, then bringing all the shopping home, on a bike?
All the Wiganers who work in Haydock, going to work on a bike and all the Haydockers who work in Warrington, going to work on a bike, and all the Warringtoners who work in Liverpool and all those who work in Manchester, and Leeds, Burnley, Preston, Blackburn etc., all pedalling away on their way to, and home from, work?

Too far to cycle? Take the bus! or train!
Them Men couldn't give a shit about Us Men.

It's all a big government trick!

It'll be like living in the 1800's all over again. Except we'll have a telly and a phone. And a computer!

When I'm promoted to the status of one of the 'them men', My first rule will be to make EVERYONE's driving licence void, Then to get a new driving licence you must first,
1. ride a bike for 2 years and prove competent
2. ride a motor bike for another 2 years and prove competent
3. Men may then drive a car subject to a test. but, women must only drive while supervised by a man and display a ,'W' plate to warn other drivers,
