Bryn Flash

Does any of you oldies remember the big lake called The Flash in the middle of the fields between Wigan Road and Bryn Road, A dairyman called Fairhurst used to own those fields? It seems by looking on Google Earth, that Nichol Mere School is built there. I think that the Flash was filled in around 1948 o 50.

yes Alan, I fished there and remember it being drained, I remember the men putting the fish in tanks and taking them to the back lodge, I was about 10 or 12 then i think ?

Alan85 the flash(Nical Mere) was still there in the early 70's and before they built the council houses they drilled down and poured concrete to various depths every few feet apart. We used to call the site little boneo because in your minds eye the houses are set on concrete stilts. The new houses nearer Bryn Road are all built on concrete floats

I fished in the flash up to 1966 Alan ,it was filled in soon after, I think houses were built there, Garswood Hall Angling had the fishing rights.

Nicol Mere school was opened in 1976

I worked on those houses, 1976/7 , the flash was gone then, I was working for a contractor to the council, where the flash was, is still a field, I'm almost sure the houses are not built over it, Tonker will know, he knows more than google does,

They didn't build on the old flash site back in the 1970s but now most of Benjamin fold is on the site of the flash, the rest of it being the field yoo mention

The Long & Narrows was another Garswood Hall water, and there was other one close too, I think it was called No1 lodge.

Number 3 lodge, we could walk through Garswood Hall pit yard in the 50s to get too them before the pit closed in 1958 then they stopped us for safety, about the flash anyone know where the overflow was and where did it run

Tom you are right about that it's still all grassed over, from the Railway terrace houses just after the bridge on the right was all bogie land down to Nical Rd and was back filled that pushed the water together forming the flash it was never levelled off round the water, there was only one field that they could grow anything on that would be about where the school is now

Yes, but Landgate is on Bryn estate so he was Bryn Flash too. Although, George was more 'flop' than 'flash'!

I cannot comment, I never saw, or even wanted to see but, legend has it that, it filled a 'sub', as in a subway sub,
( a foot long) bun , cob , barm, or whatever you put a hotdog in,

He once claimed that 'if he dipped 'it' in a pint of bitter 'it' would touch t'bottom'!
So, after a whip-round to buy said 'pint of bitter', he dipped 'it' and, yes, 'it' did indeed touch t'bottom!
