No Deal Brexit

Started by: Tommy Two Stroke (15400)

It looks like we won't be getting a trade deal with the awkward EU (surprise surprise)

Does it really matter ?

Roll on the 31st December, and then we can tell the EU to go and take a running jump

History repeating itself.

When General De Gaulle said 'non' twice to oppose the UK joining the Common Market it was a delaying tactic. He wasn't against the UK joining but wanted the Common Agricultural Policy enshrined in European law first so that the British couldn't veto it when they joined. By extension it would later incorporate the Common Fisheries Policy.
'
''De Gaulle pointed out that Australian, Canadian, and New Zealand farmers were richer than French or German farmers, they were also astonishingly productive and their produce was of higher quality. “Britain continues to supply itself cheaply in Canada, New Zealand, Australia,” he complained at one stage. “What will we do with European, and particularly French surpluses? If we have to spend 500 billion [francs] a year on agricultural subsidies what will happen if the Common Market can no longer assist us?”
Quote from a new book by Professor Vernon Bogdanor.
You can read a review of the book here..

"U.S., Britain upbeat as trade talks enter new round"

https://uk.reuters.com/u-s-britain-upbeat-as-trade-talks-enter-new-round

Now that is a funny coincidence, isn't it ?

In the same week that Britain tells the EU to go and take a running jump as regards a trade agreement, it is announced that trade talks between Britain and America are going very well, me thinks that other things are happening here

The US does not like the EU

Britain has already agreed a trade deal with Japan and other nations

I agree with Tonker about South American beef .It is delicious,a totally different product to the tasteless Irish and Scottish beef in my opinion.

I used to buy a nice thick slab of Rump or Sirloin and cook it in a frying pan in butter and garlic, along with loads of mushrooms, the resulting steak would be delicious, and tender, and utterly succulent, and served with proper home cooked chips, made with Lincolnshire Maris Pipers, and cooked in a proper chip pon on the hob, add a selection of veg to the dish, such as fresh frozen peas, and baby carrots, and served with lots of bread

Now it doesn't matter how I cook steak, when served it is like eating an old shoo

Whups
55% of the food we consume is supplied by UK farmers and growers, 19 % is imported from outside of the EU and 26% from the EU.
Thus the cost of 74% of the food we eat isn't affected by Brexit.
Food imports to the EU include quotas and tariffs from countries that don't have free trade agreements with the EU.
The main categories of food imorts to the UK are fruit and veg, beef and beverages. There must be scope there to get more home supplied food and alternative sources of supply for most of the rest.
