It's fate just made it onto the National main BBC 1-00 o' clock news.

I watched that, and it has been empty since 2006 and I don't think it is a case of who will pay the millions of pounds it will take to renovate it, but who will pay the 100s of thousands of pounds to demolish it, and the same is true of Eckersley Mill

I guess fundamentally it comes down to the choice: site cleared of dereliction, and used for development, or refurbish and re-purpose what is there. And I guess the beneficiaries of either outcome might not be the same people, and similarly in respect of whoever ends up footing the bill. It is not too far removed from the current topical debate concerning why UK can no longer economically replace and develop its failing infrastructure!

It comes down to commercial decisions, in that if a developer spends millions on renovating a mill, what sort of return will that developer get on the investment, because a flat for sale in a mill in Wigan, will not fetch anywhere near the price of a flat in a mill in Manchester, and the same with rents, folk will only pay so much rent for a flat in a mill in Wigan, but would be prepared to pay more for the same thing in Manchester, so it comes down to the figures involved, and that makes renovating a mill in Wigan 'unviable' as a commercial venture

Yes, that is precisely why I alluded to outcome maybe dependent upon whomsoever ends up footing the bill. I had the slight impression that the person who spoke on TV was maybe harbouring the hope that some kind of government (ie paid by the tax-payer) funds might materialise.

Who knows? Lesser causes have scooped multi millions from Lottery for restoration.

Trencherfield mill apartments are very mediocre...typical wigan

I know of two young couples who bought when they were new on the market. ( my nephew and wife and my cousins grand-daughter and husband) both couples now in houses. Weren't too smitten for several reasons, especially the height of rooms leading to heating costs and costly maintenance fees.
