The energy policy of the 1964 Labour government signalled the end of coal as the primary source of fuel for electricity generation. When the oil and nuclear, on fiddled economics, power stations were given the go ahead the production of large scale deep mined coal was doomed. This terminal decline was accelerated with the discovery of North Sea gas which became the fuel of choice for power stations.
