I was watching a news report about this yesterday, and basically the reason we have free banking is due to the charges that banks apply to accounts - ie: the daily charges for overdrafts etc. If everyone remained in the black I daresay they would begin to apply charges for withdrawals at cashpoints etc.

At the moment the banks are reluctant to take the first step to charge for banking - as folk would very quickly close their accounts and take their money elsewhere - I wonder if that would cause another banking crisis?
