Dirk Hartog's voyage in 1616 was the first recorded European discovery of Australia. Hartog and his crew aboard the Dutch East Indies Company ship Eendracht made their discovery accidentally, landing on the west coast of Australia on what is now called Dirk Hartog Island in Shark Bay.

To make their landing the crew nailed an inscribed pewter plate to a post. Hartog called the new land Eendrachtsland after his ship. Hartog returned to Europe in 1618 after travelling on to Macassar in modern Indonesia.
