Scholes won many admirers among the game's very best with
former France playmaker Zinedine Zidane calling him his
"toughest opponent" and "undoubtedly the best midfielder of his
generation".

Barcelona midfielder Xavi has said Scholes was a role model
and the "best central midfielder I've seen in the last 15, 20
years" and suggested this year that if he had been Spanish he
might have been rated more highly.
