Whichever party wins the next election the financial situation will severely restrict the room for manoeuvre on public spending. In this financial year government revenue from taxes etc. will be £37,000 per household. Government spending will be £42,000 per household leaving a structural deficit of £5,000 per household (£132 billion in total).
Debt interest payable will be £94 billion. That’s more than we spend on education,£81 billion or defence,£32 billion.
