The music was originally scored for solo piano, then later for orchestral performance.

But the familiar version associated with Alfred Hitchcock is Bernard Herrmann's arrangement of the piece: less gentle and transposed up a third to render it rather more dramatic. Bernard Herrmann was extremely skilled at such like composition.

Hitchcock himself has said he thought that a third of the dramatic tension attained in his productions is attributable to Herrmann's music.

So today, we oft see remakes of films that were successful for Hitchcock, but without Herrmann's music.

And people express surprise when they flop.
