I once lived in a stone built house, with walls about 80cm thick, but the window sills were not that deep, but a relative had a stone built, but white rendered cottage, the likes of what you would have found in an Enid Blyton book, it was at a windswept seaside location, on a cliff top overlooking a natural bay, with a very small harbour, now that had window sills you could sit in, the only thing missing from the books were caves, and I spent a lot of time round the 'point' looking for caves, but no caves and no smugglers, we spent Christmases and other holidays there, and that was in the late 1960s and early 70s.
