Why are they so expensive in UK?

Unanticipated event prevented my usual shop this weekend, so no toast for brecky.

Local shop only had sliced and Tiger Bread: no thanks, I'd rather go without!

So, had croissant and coffee.

A single croissant cost more than what I usually pay for an 800g Farmhouse loaf!

A lot of the shops sell croissants, and it seems they sell in quantity, so they seem to no longer be a niche item.

Don't eat them often, and I gather they are not a very healthy choice, so perhaps as well they are a more costly alternative.
