The SS Empire Windrush, the first ship to arrive in the UK carrying would be immigrants from the West Indies, was carrying emigrants from the Caribbean, Polish refugees from Mexico, a large contingent of English plus Welsh, Scotch.Burmese and Gibraltarians. The West Indians had in the main answered job adverts in the English press for London transport, the NHS and the Atlas Rubber Company. Around a half of them had relatives in the UK and had made arrangements for accommodation in the UK. A sizeable number of the remainder were housed in a deep air raid shelter under Clapham Common.
