General (General discussion, talk about anything.)
My father-in -law was a Billinger... he always advised or offered alternatives on local dialect... and once said a Wiganer would say something like "I just saw a dog reynd't' corner"... and Billingers would say " I just saw a dug rarnd't 'corner. But it changed from relative nearby areas - mostly the same dialect but with regional differences within a small town. I remember in my early working years struggling to know what folk from Aspull were saying...hast gettn anooo (have you got enough, and so on). One old man asked me "Ersse thememi" I had to continually ask please say again.... It was only when he pointed to his wrist that I realised he was asking the time (How's the enemy.... a reference to time!).
I do remember my mam once telling me that she was parading (as a teenager) along Whelley up to Aspull (as everyone did in Wigan, Pem, etc way back). Someone asked if they knew where Cale Lane was as she was trying to get in touch with someone. My mam's mate said she didn't know... my mam looked at her mate and said "yes you do - you live in Cale Lane!"
Her response was 'No I don't... I live in Kyle Lone"!!!
If ever there was chance to create a local film or series based on accents and nostalgia, etc. then there is much to glean from the accents of Wigan and larger district.
