Found this snippet in "The Pleasure Palace" by Brian Murphy, ISBN: 1 874712 41 7

The Alliance Hall was built in 1893 as a Salvation Army Citadel and opened as a cinema in February 1909 under the name 'Canada Picture Palace', derived from the Canada Picture Company, distributors of the films shown there... ...people continued to call it 'the Canada' until it closed in 1945.
