Saddam Hussein was a Sunni leading a country with a Shia majority. The Iranian revolution brought a Shia country hostile to Saddam Hussein.Since time immemorial Shia and Sunni have been at each others throats. The American backing for Iran against Iraq led to thousands of Sunni and Shia deaths. This was the tribal part the Americans didn’t understand when they tried to impose democracy on Iraq which would have led to it becoming a fully Shia country.Saddam Hussein wasn’t best pleased.
You would have thought the Americans would have at least have considered the long term outcome when they deposed the Shah of Iran, their equivalent of a king. It was a US strategy that brought the religious leadership to Iran. The rest is history and a more uncertain world.
It was the same in Rwanda with the Hutu and Tutsi with countless killed on both sides.
