I feel the same about piercings and what they and tattoos say to me is "look at me", "I demand you look at me", because they lack self-esteem and have a need to be noticed by everyone.

I remember a student being interviewed on the Northern News, about 3 years ago, he was complaining that his "grant" wasn't enough to keep him clothed and fed. Everything was going ok till he turned his arms over, showing that one of them was covered in tattoos!
And I thought,get your priorities right, sunshine.
