OC,

'Council Watch Committees': I bet not many people remember them.

When I lived in Manchester in 1960's, they banned the film, 'It Happened Here'. No prior announcement, we turned up to view said film only to find it was not going to be shown.

It has since been shown on TV, and I can think of nothing in the content that might have prompted the ban.

I think it was an ideological response and the very idea they wished to quash: the film postulated a Nazi victory in WW2, and subsequent occupied Nazi England. It resolved with a US invasion with GIs coming from Ireland to landings in NW England.

Not an outstanding film, by any means.

Also though, not a film which in any way shape or form either glorified or expressed approval of such a scenario. It is very difficult to see why anyone would want to stop someone from watching such a film.

It happened here: original trailer

Review

Maybe worth pointing out that the time this film was released was closer to WW2 than is today to 9/11, and the latter is still colouring how what goes on in the world is presented in the news.
