Good Evening everyone we have been asked to share the following information with you .
Statement from Standish Councillors
We have tonight been informed by our MP Lisa Nandy that one of our contingency hotels is to be closed. Your 3 Standish Councillors Debbie Parkinson, Terry Mugan and Ray Whittingham are pleased at the Government’s decision to stop using one of our hotels to house asylum seekers. We have been working hard with Wigan Council and its officers using the appropriate and most effective channels to lobby the Government. We thank them all for their support which we know will continue.
Thank you also to our MP Lisa Nandy who has also been working on our behalf behind the scenes at Westminster to lobby the Government relentlessly. Our letters, emails and meetings objecting to the use of Kilhey Court to The Home Office, Suella Braverman MP, Robert Jenrick MP, Serco and Britannia and Macdonald Hotels and others have been acknowledged and we hope that the Government will stick to its word after previous promises were not kept. We will continue to push for this and to ensure that the second hotel is stood down and returned to our community as soon as possible.
As soon as we are able to confirm which hotel will be the first to close we will update our residents.
We will continue our monitoring meetings with all stakeholders which includes residents until both hotels are no longer used to house asylum seekers.
We would like to thank Standish residents for welcoming the asylum seekers, donating clothing, toiletries in huge quantities but it is time for the situation to end now. We will continue to work for all Standish Residents
