As Tonker says, Hallowe'en began here in England well hundreds of years ago, as a Celtic Pagan Festival.

The American version is Trick or Treat and it's there where devilment and mischief takes place, not to mention crime.

When my partner was still alive, we would join in with buying sweets for the kids, and look terrified when they came to the door in their "frightening" outfits.

However, one year when I was living alone, I answered the door, and truly was scared. There were three young men there, all bigger than me, and they were probably in their late teens. I slammed the door in their faces and I've never opened my door to anyone after dark since then, unless someone I know is expected.
