Sad that we cannot see what is underground. If you could go through that portal in Worsley (OK.I know you really cannot, that it would be incredibly dangerous) but travel through in your imagination. There is more than 50 miles of underground canals, with all sorts of structures. There are three levels, there are inclined planes, even steps all the way back up to the surface at Walkden. In 1960's they were still maintained by NCB, so occasionally you can come across descriptions and accounts of this subterranean stuff.
