Gaffer, to discover why social housing causes financial crisis, you also have to factor in the number of tenants who are claiming housing benefits.
The houses are built, then tenants occupy them and the council has to pay the rent for them. They are then a running liability for the government, as they are responsible for funding repair and maintenance costs as well.
Housing benefit alone cost the government £25 billion in 2016, it's now dropped to £19 billion.
I reckon it's going to increase again after this covid fiasco.
