Why did they build Warrington Road from the end of Poolstock Lane to Newtown ?
If you look on very old maps, the southern route into Wigan is along Poolstock Lane, Warrington Road does not exist, and that is why Poolstock Lane curves around on it's journey into Wigan, because in the olden days, road builders had to follow the contours of the land, hence a winding and twisting Poolstock Lane, by the time they built Warrington Road, they levelled the land using Irish earth moving equipment, hence they could build it in a straight line.
