Flash in the pan, meaning that, It does not amount to anything and, It comes from the days of firing muskets,
when the trigger is pulled, the flint lights the power in the pan then, the power in the pan lights the main charge in the barrell which fires the ball,
A flash in the pan means the main charge never happened,
