Freaky,

The driving force for Inward investment is the need to provide long term good quality employment. The investment also brings substantial revenues for the exchequer from business rates and employer national insurance.
Global employers can obtain corporation tax relief on such as intellectual property rights held by the company head office. For example the Irish corporation tax rate is 12.5% but extra allowances can bring it down to 7%. This low level has given Ireland a solid employment base of skilled and well paid jobs provided by mainly US tech companies. Those jobs wouldn’t exist without the low level of corporate taxation.
You’re spot on with your observation that the UK would be a much diminished economy if our overseas investors departed.
