That, ianp, is because people sway towards etymological meanings of words generally accepted in English vocabulary.

Crooke is a village. Standish is a town.

Yes. in most European countries they are. They are municipal burial grounds.
However, many churches in England have their own burial grounds, which are not cemeteries. If they are attatched to the church, they are churchyards. If detatched from church grounds, they are graveyards.
I imagine the difference is tha land. Churchyards and church graveyards will be on glebe land.
Cemeteries are the responsibility of local authorities and are on government land.

Standish is still the same size as it's always been.
