If you lived in a street were everyone hated you for whatever reasons what would you do knowing full well that at some point you will be attacked and driven out?... You would defend yourself, family and property by all means available this is what Israel has done from its independence in 1948 when the IDF was established because of their need to defend themselves from its larger aggressive neighbours. Their stratagem to allow this is by the ability to rapidly mobilise themselves hard and fast taking the fight to their enemy, this they do exceptionally well, and for a force that has a fairly small active duty component it's very well organised saying that about two thirds of it's personnel are conscripts a very well trained and maintained reserve force of both sexes. This is all backed up by some very good early warning systems and missile defences, about two and a half thousand tanks (Merkava) and many more thousands of armoured personnel carriers. Moshe Dayan was the man of his time he was responsible for the major reorganisation of the Israeli army, a great tactician and commander in war.
