Your thoughts on Saxon and Viking Wigan

Started by: JR (526)

I am interested in only actual or at least fairly certain indicators of influence by Saxons and Vikings in Wigan. It is difficult for me to acquire reasonable info as most is speculation at best.

Interesting; it appears that historians can't offer any evidence here.

The only saxon influence I know of, is the old saxon prayer base on Standish Wood Lane.

It's a stone base with a square hole in it that used to house a prayer cross.

Many thanks. This is something I wasn't aware of. I will certainly look into it.

There are two more such sockets in the same area - one at the junction of Standish Wood Lane with Green Lane/ Beech Walk, and the other at the point where Green Lane has a right-angle bend opposite Prospect House.
The top of a cross is sunk in the ground near St Marie's Church, at the junction of Beech Walk/ School Lane/and Almond Brook Road.
