What am I doing wrong? Earlier this year I planted some Maris Piper Spuds and left them to grow banking up when required. A fortnight ago I cut back some of the dead tops. Twice over the last few days I have lifted some spuds and wanted them has boiled spuds. This is were it has gone wrong, Cooked them on a medium heat but the spuds have just ended up has a sloppy mush in the bottom of the pan. When I cook shop bought spuds (M Piper) I don;t have this problem and end up with perfect boiled potatoes. Any ideals has I have plenty of potatoes to lift yet

Hi Peter P, I think you have been extremely lucky with your bought Maris Pipers, as they are known as a brilliant chipping potato, also as good for roasting, and can make a nice mash, BUT! should never, ever be used as a plain boiling spud........It Disintigrates.

Weatherwax when I do roast spuds I part boil the spuds and then put them into the chip pan to finish them off the rest of the potatoes I continue to boil on a low/medium light and the spuds have never gone into a sloppy mush. Have used shop bought M Piper for years and never had a problem.

Peter I grow a lot of veg and have found with new potatoes especially m piper they only need max 15 mins boil older ones 10mins max longer. something to do with the texture In new potatoes not hardening off. Ripen more I suppose for want of a better word. better for roasting I found
