anybody know why Arthur Thomas has left the board. Too much excitement

Arthur Thomas has been a breath of fresh air to the Leigh Centurions,he has kept the club going in the last four years and we are all very grateful for that,it was Arthur who has contributed out of his own pocket and got Leigh were they are today with a very very good Championship team,He has deserved his well earned retirement and we all wish him well, but Arthur is now 70 plus and wants to hand over to a younger man, there has been a deafening silence from the club,since his announcement yesterday.I wonder if there is an investor waiting in the wings,what is certain is that we could do with at least another thousand through the turnstiles every home match. but the Leigh public seem to be apathetic and I dont know why,all I can say is that the days of my childhood in the 40s and 50s when there were regularly 13,14,15,000 and more going to Hilton park have gone for ever,too many other attractions I fear,however Peawapp as long as his heart is ticking over will be watching Leigh and I know a lot more like myself. so what will happen without Arthur I know not but he has done well and I wish him the very best in the future.

nice to see such a good piece, about a person that has sat on a board, and put their hands in their pockets, to help a club to survive the bad times and to help them pull through. he does deserve to have a long and happy retirement.

I have heard today that the Lythers have serious cash flow problems, and Mr Thomas is not prepaired to bail them out with his own money any more. Mr Robbie Hunter (or whatever he calls himself these days )is stinging them for £1000 a week and has not played for 3 months. Also thier Salford bound coach recieves £2000 a week. It seems very strange that thier Chairman, who I believe is in perfectly good health, should give up his position half way through the season when his team is riding high at the top of the league

I agree with you, It is only rumours about Millward, but I believe the other information is not far off correct as it comes from someone within the club. By the way,I wish Leigh all the best, they have a great team and I would love to see them in Super League.

not posted for a while but having read peter gs reply to my old adversary peawapp it leads me to believe that peter g is a little disturbed he seems to have a major problem with Leythers by the way neither peawapp nor me are Leythers we are Lowtoners,but peter g just seems to read peawapps posts and then put his own interpretation on them,He needs to read them properly before replying to them.I have no love for peawapp having had many run ons with him in 60 odd years but peter g is something else,peawapp once asked him if he was only 18 months old, I reckon he's about 9 months old grow up peter g you stupid thick crust munching idiot

I have today visited the sports village and have spoken to the people in the know and they have told me to say that it is "Business as usual" at the Centurions they are presently engaged in dialogue with a consortium of local businessmen and hope to release a statement after further talks in the next few days ,this is some positive news methinks and I am now feeling much happier

yes your right there ruddy I went to Sheffield of course but like Leigh you couldn't pay cash had to get a ticket to get in,why they dont have a cash only turnstile defeats me, doesn't bother me of course with a season ticket but I do hear plenty of moans from visitors when they realise that they have to join two que's one to buy a ticket and then another one to get into the stadium,is there a cash turnstile at wigan ?

theyre appealing for extra support to get the crowd average up to 3,000.

Now down to a average of 16,500 from 21,000 in the first season.

More people watched our last home match than watched WiganRL's previous two games.

people dont expect a so called "minority sport" to have big crowds were as with a premiership team they do but we know thats not happened at latics and i doubt very much it will happen next season

An interesting point
Latics average 16810 for 19 premiership matches.

Warriors average 17240 for 5 super league matches so far.
With probably only Leeds likely to get near that ,I think the Latics will probably get the highest average attendance overall in Wigan.
When you combine the two, Wigan compares very favourably for the number of spectators supporting their local teams with any other town in the country,in fact I think it's the best

The home games against Huddersfield and Warrington are expected to attract gates of over 20,000.

Will be interesting to see who will have the best average attendance and as you say, something for a small town like Wigan to be proud of!

It's not rocket science, we are talking about average attendances,just what do you mean
Doesn't every crowd figure include away support

I am more interested in home support, after all that is what counts long-term.

The day you start relying and hoping for away support is the day to start worrying.

I have seen man city sell out their allocation at the jjb one year and boycott it another.

I have seen Bradford bulls almost fill the north stand one year and struggle to bring a thousand the next.

So just being curious as to what you mean,what do you make of the attendances of 24 and 21 thousand at the two well attended Warriors matches,and then the two home attendances of 12 and 13 thousand?
I don't have the problem of worrying about most things,but I do like to acknowledge facts and figures, and not let what I would like to see cloud my judgement.
In the latics programme it gives the number of away fans attending,so you have a good idea by using simple arithmetic how many home fans attend the match!
I don't think for one minute that the West Ham match is indicative of the latics support,or that the saints and wire matches show the total support current at the warriors,but it does show the potential at both clubs!
No excuses the figures tell the whole story,it could be close at the end.

Yes I know that,it was the Barrow cup tie ,and I was just replying with a comparison to the two cup games quoted ,both pay at the door at the football,and not free to ST's ,it just did not seem a fair like for like to me.

I just think it's very difficult today to afford to support sports teams,especially with young families!

just to add that not long back them 12 and 13K crowds were 7,8 and 9k crowds.

Well I would put it down to the teams success,and good luck to them!

The fact remains that the Warriors crowds are on the up and the Latic's crowds are on the down.

Like any other club, it's all down to success or failour!

It's also time that some people faced the fact that being in the Premiership has helped the Latic' get bigger attendances then the Warriors, who in recent seasons have never won anything, especially when Whelan owned them.

Now the Warriors are doing far better under the ownership of Lenegan and now even making a profit and not a loss which was the case under Whelan.

Wigan rl made a £108,000 profit last year. Expecting a profit between £75,000 and £200,000 this year.

some of the larger crowds is down to success, but most of it can be put down to good marketing. that year(2006)they were facing relegation they averaged over 16k.

Ian Lenegan announced it at the recent fans forum. (not really something he would lie about)

it is also pretty well known that in the last year of DW ownership the club showed a loss of £720k

whether there is anything available on the website, company house,(pay site) not too sure.

I see Allan Rowley has resigned as CEO at Leigh. I think it is connected with Arthur Thomas. Allan worked for Arthur Thomas and was seconded to Leigh. Perhaps peawapp can clarify.

Allan indeed worked for Arthur but unfortunately last friday Arthur had to announce that both his businesses and gone bust his concrete business and his painting business,and this meant that Allan and his other employees had to be made redundant.Allan was seconded to Leigh Centurions as C.E.O. and consequently has had to look for employment,this indeed is not good news for us. I would like to wish Allan all the very best in his search for a job and hope he is successful, this is by far Leigh's best season for ages and we were all hoping for some silverware this season,there are positive vibes coming from the club today as I have just paid a visit there all we can do is hope that the season doesn't now implode
