Latics/Luton

Started by: JR (527)

Congratulations to Luton. Fantastic!
Bit of nostalgia here for Latics fans...
Back in the 60s Alan Brown was Latics' player manager - later just manager. Great player and great manager. He was headhunted by Luton and became manager... taking Latics winger John Ryan with him. Ryan was a great winger with unbelievable dribbling skills...
I first saw Latics in (I think) 1965. But I do remember the team -
Starting with goalkeeper and working forward; Halsall, Houghton, Wilkinson, Crompton, Craig, Roberts, Ryan, Llewellyn, Lyon, Brown, Stanley.

Hi Jacks52,
I'm intrigued to know who your brother-in-law was.
I eventually (as a schoolboy) got involved with Latics pools - collecting subscriptions. Apart from a bit of pocket money I was given a pass for all the home games!

Remember watching latics in a fa cup replay against tranmere in the snow…we equalised in the dying seconds but it was disallowed cos the ref said he blew full time berthed ball hit the back of the net…probably November 64

Roylew,
I do remember it well but I think it was late 66. The headlines in the paper was something like "Latics in Winter Wonderland". Great match and robbed. I was told that if the replay had gone into extra time the ref would have missed his last train (but I don't know if it's true). It was a big crown that night, I think delayed kick off because of the snow creating travel problems.
Jack52,
Yes it was Alf Craig; great strike and unusual because he was a centre half.
Wow, Walter Stanley - brilliant left winger but great attacker and header too. If my memory serves me right was he also in the building trade as they were all part timers back then? It's just that I was in charge of a council landscape gang back in the late 70s/eighties and an older guy said he once worked in the building trade with a guy called Walter Stanley who was a footballer.
I'm out of the country for a week now but will catch up on any responses when I'm back.
